There are still a fair amount of the old Jacobs R-755 L4 radials out there. A lot were made for the war effort for single & multi engine trainers. My pop flew the AT-17 Cessna (T50 Bobcat) for multi engine training during the war and they had the Jacobs L4 engines. The amount of Pratt & Whitney R-985 engines made during the war was phenomenal and Jacobs built a lot of those too. The Shakey Jake is harder to find parts for but they are out there. They don't make for a very good car engine though. They like to run at a good cruise rpm. They were a well built engine for their time. I just like to hear them run but with a prop like they were designed to do even if it is a test club.

Those of us who grew up in the 50's may be more familiar with the Cessna T-50 as Sky King's first Songbird in the early episodes.

I love radial engines as much as I do flatheads! That’s quite a neat truck.
Nothing like the sound, I work near the airport and get to hear an occasional DC 6 fly overhead.

I love a radial engine too. But I also loved the Sky King show. Every week out of the blue of the Western sky also came his niece Penny.....

Saw this radial this past summer at a local show. Came off an ice boat that ran between Madeline Island and the shore of lake Superior during the winter. Was interesting to watch as they were adjusting the timing.

I used to work for a guy that used an old T-6 Texan trainer to drive to school when he was in high school. He and he brother bought it surplus just after the war. They took the wings off but left everything else operational. They lived out in rural Kansas farm country near Fort Scott in eastern Ks so all they had was dirt roads to the local school. He told me that they could get it up fast enough with the old worn out P&W R-1340 to get the tail wheel up and drive on main gear using the rudder & elevator to control the damn thing. I suspect they had their parents worried about them most of the time and likely the local school teacher as well. What a way to travel. He and his brother both became pilots after they got out of school. Hell they were already aces at the art of taxi.

That is a really great word picture! On two wheels must have felt an awful lot like flying, and let's face it... The forward vision would have been improved at least 100%!

cool as love it just goes to show there no such thing as"" it wont fit "" There only two limits " how soon do you want it " and" how much can you afford" and if you want it bad enough the second question dont matter

I saw this truck in person at the Lone Star Roundup in Austin, TX a few years ago. The engineering and workmanship was impressive.

Current stable consists of 1946 1/2 ton pickup turned woodie wagon with FH V8, 1947 Tonner Pickup (red) mostly stock with exception of a cummins 6at turbo diesel, 1946 Tonner Pickup (green) with 226 cu in 6 cyl flathead, 1979 Toyota landcruiser wagon, completely encased in 1947 Ford Jailbar sheet metal.
