Default 39 shift upgrade

I am wondering if any one has purchased the shift upgrade package offer for sale by Hot Rod John? Two rails, springs and detents, all for the 39 top shifter. I am wondering how it effects shifting when installed?

Terry, we have removed those from several shifter towers over the years. This kit is a patch for early Ford transmissions that are popping out of second gear. It might help hold the ones that are marginally worn but the trade off is the extreme difficulty shifting from one gear to another. The solution to the original problem is to repair the trans to eliminate the sloppy endplay.

I installed one and have not had a chance to drive it on the road yet. The one thing i can say is, it shortened the shift pattern.

I too have removed these kits from clients transmissions. makes it very difficult to shift as mentioned by Mac in a previous post.
I do not believe you will be happy with this...

Not sure I understand, you say shortened the shift pattern. It's just an overly strong detent system is it not? It doesn't change the geometry of the shift mechanism, or am I missing something?
Martin.

You are correct in that it does NOT change the geometers.
It is, as you figured correctly, a STRONG detent. Only a "band-aid" for the real issues.

Thanks for confirmation.
Doesn't sound like a good idea at all. Sounds like a used car salesmans dream fix, along with saw dust in the trans, these two together will be a "fully reconditioned transmission"!
Best stay away, rebuild the transmission if you think these are "needed"
Martin.

Yep. The 'second gear' club is easy to join, expensive to leave. Most of us learn to live with it.

I fitted this kit to my old 36 and removed it, very hard to shift and slow, almost have to wrench it between gears,

There are a lot of stories about Hot Rod John on the HAMB now. Before I knew anything about him, I ordered a throw out equalizer shaft from him off flea-pay and it ended up having smaller dimentions on the journals than the worn one that I already had. That proved to me that the man is not worth anyones trust for anything.

I saw him selling at LARS a couple of years ago. I just stared at him. I wanted to see what a person like him looked like.

Amen to the hard shifting......Springs were crudely cut and way to stiff. Made shifting very difficult. Took it out and put original stuff back in. After a proper rebuild the trans is fine.
