Default Question for Northwest Barners

I'm putting a dropped axle in my '40, got the axle/spring/wishbone assy out of the car, but I don't have a spring spreader so I need help with front spring & then perch pin removal. Any shops in the Everett to Mount Vernon area with experience @ this?
Thanks, Bob

put a C-clamp on the spring, (up near center bolt) take the center bolt out, loosen C-clamp slowly until the spring is relaxed. take each spring off. you wont need a spring spreader as the main leaf comes off easily once all the leaves are off. just unbolt shackles.

install on the new axle the same way. bolt main leaf onto axle/shackles, once its on stack the other leaves on and run the bolt back through. clean each spring up, paint them, maybe add Teflon strips in between each spring before installing.

oil spring perches, don't pound them. stick a rod/ long screwdriver in shackle hole, twist back and fourth until loose.

After taking out the center bolt I like to put in a length of threaded rod with a couple of nuts to limit the expansion of the spring in case the C clamp slips off.

This will work and will make the job safer. If you don't have a threaded rod, run down to the NAPA store in Stanwood and pick up a new spring center bolt instead. It would probably be a good idea to replace it anyway. They are extra length and cut to fit. Take your old one as there are different sizes though. You could also take the assembly to Maxwells Metal in Marysville. Their phone number is (360)659-5519
