Body Wood Question
A question about the body wood kits I ordered from Macs. The kits are now at the customs office here in Germany and they want to know what kind of wood these pieces are from, because it is forbiiden to import some kind of wood sorts.
It is unbelievable, because when I import a Model A it has the same wood inside and it goes through. Have asked the guys from Macs, but they don't answered it yet. Hope anybody can help me with that question. Thanks, Alex |

Re: Body Wood Question
If the wood was made by Classic Wood in North Carolina it is probably made of white ash. That is what Steve Canon (the owner) told me several years ago. If I were you, I would find out what kinds of wood are allowed and make sure the wood kit is "made from an acceptable wood" if you know what I mean. I sure don't understand why any kiln dried wood would be banned in Germany.

Re: Body Wood Question
Odds are it's the ash that is banned.

Re: Body Wood Question
I have done some exporting to Europe, and the concern was that the wood was Kiln Dried, and not direct from the forest. The parts you purchased certainly were heated to the required 140 F in a kiln prior to being worked. I think whomever you landed for a customs agent is being a tad bit overzealous? Macs can get a "Bug Stamp" code for export from whoever did the woodworking to certify that the wood used is free of invasive life forms.

Re: Body Wood Question
It is Ash. I cut an Ash tree here in Pa and it was identical to the wood in a topwood and sills that I bought from Classic Wood. The Ash from my tree was not kiln dried! Ash is different from other woods in that it doesn't need drying prior to working or burning. Are there any Morgans in Germany? To this day, the Morgans are body-framed in Ash. Perhaps you could notify the Morgan Co, in the UK about Germany's restrictions.

I asked the shipper about the wood sorts that could be imported and they told me, that ash is something that don't make a problem. So they told it the customs and the pieces go through. It is unbelievable they hold the parts back up to two weeks untill they ask me what kind of wood it is. Terry, yes we have a lot of Morgans here in Germany. Thanks for the idea on asking them. Alex |
