Steering parts for 1964 Fairlane gear box
Does anyone know where I can find the internal parts to completely rebuild the steering gear on a 1964 Fairlane. The gear box is #HCA BU 4E 12 B. I have searched the internet with no results. There are complete steering boxes on Ebay, but they don't know the gear ratio and will only say that their box will replace the above number. I have no ideal what I would be getting if I ordered one of these. Any help on parts or a rebuilt box would be greatly appreciated. Have a great day and God Bless, Selmer

Thanks for the replies. No luck at either web site, Larres Corporation or https://www.redheadsteeringgears.com/, for a steering gear. Have a great evening and God Bless, Selmer

Re: Steering parts for 1964 Fairlane gear box
Online website catalog / inventory lists are often weeks out of date. They may even have serviceable used parts that are not listed at all.
Call the vendor and speak directly with someone interested in helping you find the parts you need. At the least they may be able to give you other options or places to call and ask. |

No. 1- I don't blame you for not trusting any volume re-builder. Most are producing junk now. They may be guaranteed but how many times do you want to change a reman box?
Do you know exactly what parts you need? Do you have a Service Manual for the car that has a parts illustration?

Re: Steering parts for 1964 Fairlane gear box
I would like to have a new worm and sector. The box is completely worn out. The steering wheel turns at least 1/4 turn without moving the steering arm. The adjustment is as tight as it will go so all this is in the box itself. Then you can add in for the tie rod ends and so on. I have all new parts to take care of everything but the steering gear itself. This includes new (installed) ball joints, control arm bushings and ect. Thanks and God Bless, Selmer

Re: Steering parts for 1964 Fairlane gear box
Have you taken it apart on the bench? Worm and sector may be a little hard to find.
I can post an illustration of the box, you choose what you need and I will post PN's. You will have a better chance for finding NOS. You may luck out and it will only need bushings...

Re: Steering parts for 1964 Fairlane gear box
I hate to take the car apart and have it sitting in the garage in my way for weeks/months trying to find parts. I would rather have a new gear or enough parts to completely rebuilt this one before even getting started. Short on room, long on cars.
I would appreciate an exploded view drawing of the gearbox and part numbers. Have a great day and God Bless, Selmer |

Re: Steering parts for 1964 Fairlane gear box
FWIW, if nothing closer pans out, I’d call Redhead. I go see my Mom 3 times a week and drive right by them. The’re highly regarded here by both the rod guys and the truck community. Auburn is just south of Seattle, I know that’s a long ways for you, but it would be worth it if they can do it.

I'll be calling most of these people to see what they have in the way of parts or a correct gearbox. Thanks and God Bless, Selmer

Re: Steering parts for 1964 Fairlane gear box
Sorry for the delay on this steering issue. I've order a 1964 Ford parts book and a ford parts interchange manual by Paul A. Herd. The interchange manual hasn't proven to be a great success. Anyway, The steering box HCA BU had a 3 3/4 turns stop-stop in the car. When I removed it from the car and put it on the bench, the box itself has 5 3/4-6 turns stop-stop. This is more in line with the HCA CA box 20:1 ratio. The interchange book list this box as a 66/67 Fairlane, Falcon, & Comet with a solid shaft 39 1/2" long. Does anyone know if the HCA CA will fit a 1964 Fairlane? Any comments on the fit or the boxes themselves? Now the good part. When I removed the pitman arm from the gear box it was frozen to the center link. It would not move. It took a large hammer to get it to budge and budge was all it did. This explains the hard steering. Would this also explain some of the play in the steering wheel? This hole just keeps getting deeper & deeper. Any comments would greatly appreciated.
