Default 2012 Florida "Barner's Bash" Dates

We are looking at the weekend of March 16th -18th to coincide with the Billetproof show at Don Garlits Museum in Ocala. You can go to Billetproof.com for information on their event. Please note that the "Barner's Bash" is in no way affiliated with Billetproof and we will have separate and additional "Barner's Bash" only events on Friday and Sunday of that weekend. If you want to attend Billetproof, you must register on line or by mail. This date is not yet etched in stone for the "Barner's Bash" so we'd like to hear from those of you that plan to attend our event. Please feel free to suggest alternative dates. Thanks, Vic

I think that's a great date Vic. Especially with the Billetproof "off campus" activities going on it should be a jam packed weekend of old Ford fun. They are again holding the Friday evening pre-party at the No Where Bar - nice ride there with lots of parking. Saturday night there will be a gathering at the local drive-in theater with old car movie(s).

My suggestions would be along the lines of maybe a driving tour on Friday and the picnic on Sunday similar to the last time you met in Ocala. I didn't make it that Sunday due to family commitments. I'm sure there is enough scenery and points of interest for a driving tour. Anybody know John Travolta? Maybe he'll open up his ranch for some old ford folks.

Something to remember - they expect Billetproof to fill up all the available space at Big Daddy's so pre-registration will be necessary to make sure you can get in the gate.

Lee

Tom & Lee, the guys at Billetproof have been gracious enough to accommodate us (the Cigar City Flatheads CC) with, for lack of a better term, a reserved section that should be sufficient to hold all the "Barner's Blast" participants. Everyone joining us for the "Barner's Blast" will have to register with Billetproof (Billetproof.com) to be able to get into the show on Saturday, I recommend that you register quickly as space is limited. The only problem I have is scheduling our Barner events around the Billetproof show. I am not familiar with Ocala except to go to Garlits Museum. If there are any Barner's that know the area and can suggest "things to do" on Friday and Sunday, I'd appreciate the input. Vic

Hi Vic. National Parts Depot has a warehouse in Ocala and from what I've heard, they will give tours of their facility. Also I read that there they house a 150 car collection as well. I will try to contact them for more details and report back. Steve

Vic, if I can get my '35 coupe back together I would like to bring that down for a shakedown cruise. Are you thinking the whole weekend would center around the Ocala area? I like the idea of a tour especially in areas that I have not seen that much of.
Tom T and I could caravan down together from Williamsburg or Richmond area.
I did Billetproof in 2010 on my way home from the Barners Bash. Was a good show with a lot of interesting cars.
Maybe we can get our friends from the NE to come down as well.
By the time March 2012 gets here I will probably be ready to get away from the cold snowy north for some fun in the warm and sunny south .

John, that sounds like a plan to me. Steve is looking into the possibility of a tour on Friday of the National Parts Depot; I understand they have a large collection of cars on display as well. I'm really not too familiar with the Ocala area so I'll have to rely on a lot of help from Barner's that know the lay of the land so to speak. Hotels might also be a problem with the Billetproof group being just a bit larger than ours... We’ve got some time to try and work things out to everyone’s benefit, I hope. Vic

I registered yesterday, for the Billetproof show at Don Garlits on March 17th and the Cigar City Flatheads CC (host of the Florida "Barner's Bash") will have a designated parking area in the show. If you're planning to attend either or both events, I recommend registering for Billetproof as soon as possible as space is limited. Go to Billetproof.com to register. Keep checking here and on the ChevyBarn.com in the non-Chevy section for more info on the “Barner’s Bash” as it comes together.Vic

Vic, I'm all signed up/registered for Billetproof 2012. I used "the Cigar City Flathead's CC" as the name of my club. It's $30.00 to register now but I believe it was $50.00 in 2010 at the Gainesville Fairgrounds to register on the day of the show. They had lots more room there then they will have at Garlits Museum, so I'm thinking there will likely be no registering on the day of the show.

I have been to the National Parts Depot collection. There are, truly, some amazing cars there !
At one time, the owner specialized in low mileage cars. There are many with less than a dozen miles on them.

John, I registered yesterday. Anyone that wants to attend the Billetproof show (with a car) needs to register as early as possible. All the guys attending the "Barner's Bash" are welcome to use the Cigar City Flatheads as their car club affiliation. Vic

Walt, when I moved to Virginia in '95, the expression "Lord willing and the creek don't rise" was used by many and I now use it as well since I've heard it so much.

So, is the "and Audrey ...." the second part of that expression/phrase???

BTW, I'm now registered for Billetproof ....

Pete, it looks like you have done a nice job on that 40 panel. Vic may need you to haul some Wooden Indian's back to his place if he buys any at the Billetproof show

John, here's a photo of the wooden Indian I got at the Moonshine Festival in 2007. He rode home in the back of my '53 F-100 Panel but I'm sure he'd like a ride in Pete's '40, so would I. Vic

Vic, I registered and came back to find the NPD tour! Guess I better ask about where people are staying before making a reservation; will there be an attempt to all stay at the same motel?

Rich, I have not had a chance to check out hotels in the Ocala area just yet. I'm planning on doing that over the weekend. I understand that on the Garlits Museum web site (check Google) they list several local hotels. We are also trying to plan for the usual Sunday BBQ that we have at the beach in Tarpon Springs. As things come together, I'll post up-dates here and on the ChevyBarn.com non-Chevy page. Vic

Hotel/Motel rooms will be at a premium to find as the date gets closer so, if you are planning to attend, you should make reservations ASAP. If you Google Don Garlits Museum you'll find several sites listing hotels in the Ocala area. Right now the "Barner's Bash" plan is to meet in Ocala (possibly at Don Garlits) on Friday in the AM and drive to the National Parts Depot for a tour of the facility and the 150+ car museum. The pre-party for Billetproof is going to be held at the "No Where" Bar in the evening so hotel reservations for Friday night are recommended. On Saturday the "Barner's Bash" group will attend Billetproof and on Sunday, we are planning on having the annual BBQ at the usual location, Fred Howard Park on the Gulf of Mexico in Tarpon Springs, FL. These plans are subject to change between now and March 16th so stay tuned for more information.

Excellent News!!!
Things are shaping up nicely for the 2012 Florida “Barner’s Bash”( March 16th to 18th), we’ve already received donations (for door prizes) from several parts & service providers that frequent the FordBarn & ChevyBarn. If you fall into the category of a parts and/or service provider, and if you’d like to donate to the “Barner’s Bash” door prize fund, you can PM me for more details. We’d appreciate it. Thanks, Vic

Like a Mendicant Friar, albeit a little less humble and at the risk of sounding a bit overzealous (I know I’m never that way) I would like to address those “Barner’s” that provide parts and/or services to our segment of the automotive hobby, to ask that you consider providing a part or service for the raffle at the 2012 Florida “Barner’s Bash” from March 16th to 18th. We have been very fortunate in the past, and at this time we’ve received several outstanding donations for 2012 but we could always use more. If you are interested, please contact me by email at: [email protected].
Thanks in advance for your support and have a wonderful holiday. Vic

I'll post a list of the raffle prizes that have been donated after the Holidays as I hope more will come in between now and January 1st. Vic

Here are directions for the "Barner's Bash" weekend events.

On Friday, March 16th at 2:00pm we will be given a tour of the National Parts Depot (NPD) Automobile Collection.

Friday evening we will join the Billetproof party at the Nowhere Bar in Ocala however, I don't as yet have directions...

Saturday, March 17th we will attend Billetproof at Don Garlits Museum in Ocala. If you want to enter a car, pre registration is $30.00 or $35.00 at the gate.

On Sunday, March 18th we'll meet at my house (see directions from the Holiday Inn in Wesley Chapel)

From the hotel get on I75 south, go one exit to SR56, go west on SR56 (turns into SR54) to Gunn Hwy (aprox. 15 miles). Go south (left turn) on Gunn Hwy. to the second traffic light (Tarpon Springs Road). Turn right (west) on Tarpon Springs Road, travel one mile, on right you will see Council Crest Dr. (a gaited community) pull up to the key pad, scroll down to my name (Piano) and press the call button. I will open the gate. At this point I think we should plan to meet at my house around 10:30am and drive to Fred Howard Park at 11:00am. these plans are subject to change, if they do, I'll notify everyone.

Thanks for posting these updates Vic. Just wondering how many have signed up and plan to attend this year. Also, do you know if Lawson has signed up? I usually go right by Covington, GA on my way down to Ocala/Tampa. Once I get to Covington, I feel like I don't have that much further to drive. Would be great after seeing and reading his posts for the last 10 years to maybe get to really meet him and actually see his '35 PU.
How about it Lawson....what say you? Can you make it down to the Barner's Bash this year?

John, I would love it if you could talk Lawson into taking a ride with you down to Ocala, etc. for the "Barner's Bash", you just can't discuss politics or religion with him on the ride…LOL!

I just got my Billetproof conformation and have some additional information for everyone. As you know, the "Barner's Bash" will be touring the NPD auto collection on Friday, March 16th at 2:00pm. That evening we will be attending the Billetproof pre-party at the No-Where Bar. The bar is located at: 8970 SW 27th Ave. in Ocala. The phone # is: 352-237-7970.
We still could use some raffle prizes and would appreciate donations. If you would like to donate parts or services please PM or email me at: [email protected]. Thanks for your help. Vic

Vic, I'm going to bring something for the raffle. Once I figure out what to bring, I will let you know. I just need to figure out a few items that everyone or anyone would like to win. Last year was easy with that blue ceramic ('48-'51?) PU truck awards dinner center piece from the '10 National Meet in Charlotte and a '35 75th anniversary gear shift knob, but I'm scratching my head a little for this year I also received my Billetproof confirmation. I'm sure glad they moved that back in Ocala.

Well, I finally got the clutch issues sorted out in my 40 coupe with the help of some of my buds up here in da 'Burg - very similar to Saturdays at Vic's place except we're working in a pole barn, dirt floors, no heat (save for the kero bullet heater) and plenty of mud outside with all of the rain we've been having. We don't do pizza afterwards though - we get Pierce's BBQ instead. Either way, it's tradition, right?!

Anyway, with my buddy Earl riding shotgun, we'll be down sometime on Thursday, staying at the Days Inn Ocala w/JM 35 and Henry Harrock for the 2 nights, then in Westley Chapel for Sat night with y'all, leaving for home and points north after the picnic on Sunday. I actually cancelled my previous B&B reservations as the 40 clutch issues were not going well at all there for awhile. But it all worked out for the best as now we'll be hitting all the events which is great and we'll be staying with other 'Barner's as well.

For the Friday NPD tour is @ 2PM, right? Any meet up for lunch beforehand right around the tour spot?

See you guys on Friday for the NPD tour! Just in case anyone would like to join up on the ride down, we'll be taking Rt 95 up until the Rt 200 exit just north of Jacksonville where we'll head west to pick up Rt 301 south for the ride into Ocala. I've got Vic's and JM 35's cell numbers programmed into my phone just in case. My cell is 757-817-7517.

Looking forward to the weekend ....

Tom, that's excellent news, looking forward to seeing you. I'm not sure about "lunch" on Friday, as it stands right now, Don ('37 LowBoy) and I ('53 F-100 Panel) will be meeting Steve in his '55 F-100 at I75 & SR54 at 10:00am and we'll drive up to meet Mike ('41 Business Coupe) at SR50. We might get to Ocala in time to meet for lunch. Give me a call when you get to Ocala.

Vic, for some reason I liked the picture of that lady calling Betty slightly better than that spark plug firing I'm just about ready to leave here and head south. It has bin a lot more things to remember to do and pack this time then on previous trips to the Bash. I'm still trying to think of a door prize or two to bring down. The coupe is not running right now so that idea is out .

Yes, Tony I will be stopping probably to spend a night in Charlotte to deliver your parts, visit with Dennis Carpenter and possibly Paul Bradley. Will deliver your donation to Vic for a Barner's Bash door prize. I'll be calling you soon. JM

Hi Bill...I am still 'prize-less' ...but I'll think of something. It was suggested that I donate my 5w coupe, but heck...that's in the shop right now awaiting some major upgrading. Who would even want to win a prize in that condition The fordor is running super smooth right now and is loaded on the trailer for her journey south. Now the fordor still has a broken window on the drivers side front door that happened on the BPW Tour last October. It looks like a bullet hole from a shot fired at the driver So who would want to win that one either? See you there

I'm starting to get a little fired up now. I'll be flying into Orlando on Thursday at 9, then it's Flathead Fun for four days! Henry and the '36 Phaeton are already in Ocala! I can't wait to see the Museums, Don Garlits was a childhood hero. I guess we're staying at the Days In with JM35 and TomT.

Hi Jeff, I called Henry (aka Reds) yesterday. He is attending some kind of Muscle Car show in Ocala today. I think he said it's called the 'Pumpkin Run'. Sounds like that show should have been held in October to me . He said he would be ready and raring to go next Friday for the start of the Barner's Bash and then for the Billetproof Show on Saturday. I am about two hours away from Concord / Charlotte, NC right now. Had to make a pit stop for a cup of coffee and a tank of gas @ $3.75/gal. I'm getting fired up myself...like that picture of a spark plug that Vic put up the other day... LOL

Vic, you need to get up to Tony's place and see his new garage. An amazingly nice setup to say the least. I accused him of designing the plans so his garage is at least one square foot larger than yours. However, the one and only thing I could find missing is a big wooden cigar store Indian like the one you have . I think he may be frantically looking for one though and he is hopeful that he can find one before you arrive . A really nice setup that he has some great future plans for no kidding about that! I am seriously thinking about begging my wife when i get back home to let me have one built that's at least one square foot larger than Tony's garage

John, I could never compete with Tony... but I do owe him a visit. Steve just emailed me with a good idea for those "Barner's" that will be in Ocala on Friday. The NPD tour starts at 2:00pm so Steve suggested that we all meet at either the Cracker Barrel or Sonny's BBQ near the Don Garlits Museum at Noon, for lunch... Sounds like a plan, we just have to choose which restaurant so, lets take a vote... Let me know.

Vic, that does sound like a good plan. My vote would be for Sonny's. I love good southern pulled pork BBQ. The best southern BBQ I can ever remember having was in Macon, GA when my son and I came down to see the Allman Brothers at Gabba Fest. Maybe Sonny's will be just as good. I arrived here in Ocala at ~ 8:00 pm. Going out for some dinner now. Will call you in the AM.

John, I hope you had BBQ at Sonny's last night because you've been out voted... We'll all be meeting at the Cracker Barrel for lunch on Friday however; you'll have a chance to taste the absolute best BBQ in Florida on Sunday at Fred Howard Park as Mr. Moose will be serving up his ribs, etc.

That's OK Vic. At my age I'm use to being out voted . I can easily switch gears to having some biscuits and gravy with a couple cups of coffee while looking at all those old pictures and tools hanging around on the walls. I'll also be first in line for some of Jeff's BBQ ribs at the park .

Hey John, hopefully we can meet up for dinner on Thursday eve? Maybe we can hit that BBQ place then? We'll have just driven 12 hours to get there but we're always up for "cruisin da bulevaaard".

See you Tousyday ...

Tom, we could do that if you two are up for it after that long drive down. I changed Hotel's here at Ocala this morning. Will not be staying at the Day's Inn as previously planned because of a few seemingly insurmountable problems I encounter there. I'm at the Ho Jo's now which is only a stones through away from the Day's Inn. Much much nicer place with a swimming pool, restaurant, gym, tons of parking for tow rigs, and many other perks too numerous to mention here. Give me a call when you get close to Ocala.

John,

What kind of problems and is it too late to cancel the Days Inn? no parking for tow rogs I would venture to guess (or they didn't like it there)?

Jeff, thanks so much for the C.B. address. I'll plug that into my GPS and maybe cruise on over by there today in my travels in and around Ocala. Talked to Reds this am and he is having a great time on a MC with his group. Will see both of you Friday at 12:00 noon. Will meet up with Tom T. and his friend for dinner at Sonny's Thursday night. I knew I would somehow some way have to get to Sonny's for some BBQ since getting outvoted to eat there on Friday . I am waiting for a call now from Bill W. Not sure what's happening with him and LeAnn yet about their trip down.

Hi Chuck, hope to see you and Kathy at the C.B. on Friday. Let me know if you two will be in the Ocala area on Thursday. If, so you could join us for dinner if you like BBQ and if not maybe you could suggest a better place to dine .

Also, anyone else attending the Barner's Bash, and planning to be in the Ocala area on Thursday evening, please let us know with a response here or a pm. Likewise, you are also welcome to join us for dinner.

Lunch at CB was okay. JM had a sorta bad meal, but it was comped, so I don't know if that was good or bad.

There were about seven or nine cars that went over to the National Parts Warehouse. The car collection was pretty amazing, about 180 cars. Some of them were so new they had not gone through dealer prep, like an early 90's Mustang that I saw. They were purchased and parked. It was neat to look at the condition of original factory paint from that era, it would never be accepted in our circles.

A 1930 Lincoln Phaeton with rear windshield was a favorite of mine and Dad's. The guy who did the collection, all the cars belong to him and his son, really had a thing for Lincoln's.

Some prototypes, like a really trick looking Ford pickup that looked less than five years old.

The collection of Kodak and other cameras was pretty amazing too!

Will try to post more later. Did not have my camera with me for the museum. Will try to get someone else's camera and grab their photos.

Weather is awesome!

I don't know what the schedule is other than we'll start to be let into the show at 8am, no earlier. This is what I've heard. Their website has an amazing lack of information!

Paul, some of us are a bit camera shy, others may feel they are not photogenic enough, and then I think some may be on some type of witness protection program and have been advised not to allow their mugs to be shown on the internet (just kidding) Maybe at tomorrows show we can get everyone's picture taken in front of their car and post those here with other pictures of the cars.

These are pictures that someone else in our group took. I grabbed the memory card from his camera. Don't want to name him yet, but enjoy the shots.

These are from the Billetproof show.

I talked to this fellow and his wife today at the show because I had seen the car and trailer before at the Bennington, VT show a couple of years ago. Quite a guy. The Ford has a Chevy 350 and they drove it to Florida from Quebec!!
Now that is an adventure! Can you imagine all the honks and thumbs up they got on their trip? And, they are no spring chickens (our age). After talking to them, my wife Barb and I agreed we are heading to Nova Scotia again this summer in our 46.

Here's me with Big Daddy! Just hanging out! I got an autographed T shirt and a '37 fan, that Big autographed. Now I've gotta get a '37 Ford!

As you can see, the "Barner's Bash" is in full swing (there will be a lot more photos posted) and today is the BBQ and raffle at Fred Howard Park. The fun with friends and Flatheads continues. Vic

Well, another "Barner's Bash" has come to a successful conclusion. I think its safe to say that everyone had a blast at the NPD tour on Friday, Billetproof at Don Garlits Museum on Saturday and at the BBQ & raffle today. I want to thank everyone that took time to join us; we had beautiful weather all three days and as usual, John, Barb & Mr. & Mrs. Moose hit a home run with the BBQ. I did not even get a chance to take any photos but I know other Barner's did and I'm sure they will post them. Bill Wzorek outdid himself yet again with the Miss Shelly award, this year’s recipient is the one and only Lawson Cox, our resident Octogenarian. Bill had a beautiful pocket watch made with a hand painted picture of Lawson’s ’35 Pickup on the face and a silver V8 logo on the end of a leather watch fob. Congratulations to Lawson and to all the raffle winners (someone has photos and hopefully names of all the winners). I made a presentation to Bill at the request of Shelly, she created a web site for Bill's shock repair business as a gesture of appreciation for his participation and outstanding one of a kind award creations. Thanks again to all that donated to the raffle. Once I get myself somewhat organized... I'll try to post photos (with names) of the Barner's and their cars/trucks. Now it's time for a nap...

John, you and Barb need a trailer like that to pull behind the '46... Thanks again for all your help at the Barner's Bash. Vic

ME, WOW!!!. I am truly thankful and very impressed by being chosen as the recipient of the Miss Shelly Award this year. I only wish I could be more active, and attend some of the "Bashes", but seems I just can't get around like I used to.

Watch out Redneck, you are going to get that shop floor dirty if you don't watch it. LOL. Looking good. What are you using? Base coat clear coat?

Here are a few photos that put faces and names with cars, in no particular order.

Well, good morning - or, at least it is for me! We got back from the terrific Barners Bash at 8AM this morning. I drove the last 2 legs of the trip so I went to sleep, Earl went to work! No problems, no runs, no hits, no errors as they say on the way home - we were just alot further south coming home from Tarpon Springs than I imagined. The coupe performed like clockwork on t he way home - never missed a lick and nothing broke - at least that's until I check everything out on it over the next couple days.

It was a great weekend of events but hanging out with some great people really "makes it" - I really had a great time.

Thanks to Vic for all the coordinating, Bill for his thoughtful Miss Shelly award, Jeff for coordinating all of the photos - I met, "re-met", and reacquainted with some of the nicest people on the planet. And THAT's what it is all about ....
