Default Carb. question

This is kind of along the line of too much cfm question posted earlier. Generally when I run 2x2 on a flathead I only work the throttle linkage on one carb. and it seems to work good that way. And I have the look without the needless extra fuel consumption. In the past I have dealt with Holley 94's. Now dealing with Strombergs on a 59AB stock only with a Max 1 cam. So the question is how would it work out with a 48 as a primary carb. and a 97 as a secondary (not being throttled). Probably jetting the primary to 45 as I am at about 2500 ft ele. The secondary is getting fuel just not throttled. Or is it best just to go with the 2 97's and call it good? 48's were run on smaller c.i. motors back in 34.
Or were they over carbed back then? Also is there a good carb. cleaner anymore as the stuff sold these days is about useless due to EPA. rules?

I would be interested in what intake manifold you are running. Hopefully it's not a "Super".

48 is actually flowing more and was replaced by 97 for fuel effiency...
What you are looking for is the 60hp carburetors stromberg 81 for less cfm.
Any 2 carb intake unless itīs "slingshot" style is not a good choice for running progressive.

Which carburetor are you running as the primary (or only)?

I was thinking about the 48 being primary.(centered on manifold) 97 just there at idle circuit. (rear carb.)
No intention of running progressive. And really no intention of throttling 2 carbs. I was just thinking because the 255 Merc's ran a slightly more cfm with one carb. how would a 48 Stromberg with approx. 175 cfm work on a 239. Basically just working the carb. closest to center? IMO a street driven flathead will never see much over 3600 rpm so working two carbs. is a waste. I do agree the 81's are a good choice if you do decide to work two carbs. especially on a well built motor.
