bed bolts

Where can the two front bed mounting bolts for a 1936 Pickup be bought? These are for a bed with a steel floor. I think they are 7/16 x 8 carriage bolts and my usual vendors are out of them.

Unfortunately, in the "modern fastener" world, you have a need for what is approaching "Hen's teeth" status. In the current "Industrial" world I work in, 7/16th's, by and large, is what we call a "bastard" diameter. WHY automotive industry landed on using 7/16 & 9/16 diameter fasteners is beyond me (9/16 being even WORSE). Second- the length (beyond 6") moves your need into another stratosphere. The only requirement left to send it into "deep orbit" will be to ask for "Fine Thread". FOURTH- the amount you need..... IF a distributor like me could even find them, my minimum's BOTH overall amount and quantity amounts have almost made it impossible to help people like you on "special orders/needs" and I have almost gotten to a point where IF I don't stock it then it's a "NO" on ordering it UNLESS it is in carton quantities and a company I order from on a daily basis to meet order minimums (most of mine now are $100 to $500).
AS Kube astutely stated above, your best course of action is to have them made, as Kube did by welding OR as I have done, with more work and effort, by turning and internal threading two pieces together. I wish I had more encouraging info to pass along....Good luck.

Art - One source I use a lot for hardware is McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com). I checked and they don't have any 8" long 7/16" carriage bolts but do have 8" 7/16"-14 partially threaded hex head bolts ($13 for 5 bolts plus shipping).

Using Kube's recommendation of welding you could the top unthreaded part of a carriage bolt and add the bottom partially threaded section from these bolts to create exactly what you need with just one weld joint. I'm sure the original bolts were only threaded on the end.

I've done this with good results on the bed frame u-bolts for my truck. Just took a bit of welding and grinding but they all came out just fine.

Sorry I can't confirm the bolt size for you.

If memory serves, they are also square drive like the stabilizer rod bolts, not just a carriage bolt and there is a cup washer needed for them as well. If you can find some of the shorter bed bolts that were also square drive, lengthening those would work but I do not know if they are available anymore, either. I sold a pickup project and gave all of the new bed bolts I had been stashing for years to the gentleman who purchased the pickup. I may have a few used ones in the parts bin out in the storage building. I will check and get back with you through pm or email if I do.

I was not thinking the two front bolts were square drive with a cup wassher. I was told by Mac's who made the bed they were 8 inch carriage bolts. Thanks for looking for some used ones. Art

Art to my knowledge the rear most two bolts are the only carriage bolts. 7/16 coarse carriage bolts have been discontinued for around 15 years and fine thread for around 60 years. If you wished to lengthen some shorter ones I have a abundance but not at the correct 8-1/4” length

Try Bolt Depot. They sell any quantity, regardless how small. Might be a mite expensive per unit, but not too bad. I ordered some bolts from them, 4 to be exact, and the price wasn't prohibitive.

I got my bed bolts from Mack Products out of Moberly, MO, as Krylon32 mentioned.

Roy Nacewicz used to sell them (2 for $20) but he's gone and so is the supply.

I still think your best bet is to weld together the head end of a carriage bolt and the long unthreaded section with a short threaded end to the carriage bolt to create your own bolt.
