Hi all; Sounds like F-2/F-3 question. In '48 both had 8 lug hubs 16" /17" wheels, Rear diff was the same floater type. 39-47 used the floater also, but with two different wheel patterns. The rear diff looks the same 39 thru 48, with different drums? More input Barners?, the old circle trackers want the rear diffs. Newc

In 48-52, both F2 and F3s (heavy duty) were 3/4 tons. The F4 was actually the one ton. Its axle is much larger.

The early (39-41) one ton rear ends came with 17" backing plates, drums and 5 lug split rim wheels. The early 3/4 tons used a 16" brake system on the rear end. If you're thinking about using a 16" system you will have to find all the hardware (backing plates, drums and rims) to do the conversion. The later 48-52 one ton rears might have come with 16" brakes. Its easy enough to check the drums that are on the rear you're thinking about buying. Also the early one tons came with 4.86 gears not the best for highway cruising. There are after market 4.11's available for the one ton diff. from Chuck's Trucks. I put a set in my 40 Tonner which dropped the engine RPM significantly. From what I remember the dimensions of the housings were the same.
