Default Paint on Exhaust Manifold

Are there any black paints that will not burn off the exhaust manifold? I am buttoning up the engine after some work and repainted the intake manifold, but wondered if it was of any use to get the rust off the exhaust and paint it?

I just purchased a gallon of the WD40 rust remover and used it on some parts and hardware. Works about like Evaporust and might be easier to find for most people. I think I paid $36 for the gallon.

Hi Snyders have a new product.
Manifold Dressing:

I have not tried it, but I thought it might be interesting.

I just used brush on flat black stove paint. It's been there for several years and still looks good.

I used VHT Header Paint from the parts store. Put on about 4 coats, and then baked in the oven per the instructions. (Yes, the wife actually went along with this.) Works great, looks professional!

I used VHT also, available from NAPA. They have a "new cast iron" that looks better than black, in my opinion.

I agree and that's what I used about 7 years ago. After 3 or 4 years it started wearing thin and I should repaint it. If you use black the exhaust manifold will radiate more heat, thus a hotter engine compartment.

Someone may say "but black absorbs heat", which is true, but when the heat is coming from inside the black item, it also radiates the heat away faster than a lighter color. That's why many cast iron motorcycle cylinders are black. Cast iron household radiators should also be black for the most heat radiation, but who wants black in the house.

I agree with Tom about the black paint, besides that it doesn't look right to me. I use Cast Blast. The Cast Blast is holding up well on my roadster and sept 29 strip down, after seven years. All that I did was wire brush the exhaust manifold with the bench grinder and sprayed on the Cast Bast finish.

I also used the Cast Blast. It looks good and holds up very well. I also used it on the headers on my 72 El Camino and it has held up well for 3 years.

I brush oil on the manifold and then back it outsid to let it burn in. It will keep the manifold from rusting and keep the natural cast look.

Greetings Barney

I was surprised how well this worked. Brush it on with an old tooth brush. Lasted too. The type I had was a case iron color.

I have used the VHT Cast iron, purchased from my local NAPA store and am very pleased with the final finish. I optioned to not put them in the oven and chose the option of bolting the manifold on the engine and let the engine heat cure the paint. I have done at least four manifolds and highly recommend it!!!
