Manifold Gasket Replacement - New Video by Paul Shinn
In this video, Paul uses Permatex Red RTV Sealant for the manifold gasket. Any of you do this?
I did cringe watching him put 45ft.lbs. on manifold nuts. https://youtu.be/ylGWKvNvbmU |

The gaskets work fine the way they were designed. Why use RTV on these manifolds anyway? Its not like you have to seal liquids here. |

I used some Copper RTV but only because I had some. Should not be necessary if everything is flat.

Thanks for the publicity. When I discussed using the high temp RTV, I also showed why I do it. See the closeup shot of the engine block surface. Torquing to 45 ft. lbs. when installing ends up around 40 ft. lbs. after everything seats. If it makes you cringe, use less torque. That's OK. Remember, the factory didn't use torque wrenches, they just wrenched them very tight. If you see them putting the manifolds on in the assembly line video, they look like they're putting a lot more torque on them than I do. |

Even worse, you're trying to make it air tight. Prevents vacuum leaks. |

I do believe that just about any engine with a fluids connection of some sort will have some leakage, albeit very little. Heck, if three molecules of air slip past, then technically it leaks. The leak only matters if its relevant. |

Thanks Paul for another great video! Mine is going back together tomorrow with the type copper gaskets you used. I've never used a sealer on the manifold gaskets but I've had exhaust leaks to deal with. So, I'm going to use Permatex Ultra Copper Maximum Temperature RTV Silicone along with gland rings. The 45ft.lbs. does make me a bit nervous...we'll see. The gasket I'm replacing has the same blow out on #4 as yours did. I'll be using a bead of Permatex Muffler & Tailpipe Sealer on the muffler flange. Looking forward to your next YouTube. |

Neither the block nor the parts are "warped". You are jumping to a conclusion. Either you did not watch the video, or you skipped the part where I showed the close-up of the casting texture on the engine block. I'm making sure the gaskets seal properly against the block with what looks like orange peel texture on it. Could I get away without the sealant? Probably. Do I want to take the chance? No. It's my car, so I do it my way. I started making videos like that to help others, not try and be some sort of authority on the subject. If my videos don't help you, that's OK. You don't have to like them or me. This is supposed to be fun, don't let my mechanical choices steal your joy. |

I just put the manifolds on. I used Permatex Ultra Copper Silicone RTV and gland rings. Initial torque was 35ft.lbs. and then increased 1ft.lb. at a time. I couldn't make myself go beyond 42. I'm going to let it sit overnight then put the muffler back on.

I believe sealant is also recommended by CarTalk Plazas chicken soup provisioner, Kent Hoyt
