34,000 mile 1946 Ford Truck for upcoming TV episode
"Wheels of the Past" is a historically accurate and entertaining series devoted to the history and preservation of vintage cars, trucks and motorcycles which have great, informative stories to tell. Completed episodes can be watched on utube on the K Trent channel. We have just this week acquired a great survivor 46 Ford pickup parked in a shed since 1986. It has only 34,000 original miles and is to be the subject for our upcoming episode "On the Road Again" were we plan to film its return to life. We want to keep it in as close to its unrestored "Barn Find" condition as possible while making it fully derivable as well as presentable to the eye. All this is taking place in the Rapid City South Dakota area and I wanted to reach out to anyone in that area who may be willing to be involved with the production. We will be asking for technical assistance as well as finding the necessary used parts in presentable condition. Here is the truck in its present form. Thank you!!

Check out the homemade brace on the left rear fender. It's not the first time I've seen one of those.
Solid truck though, except I have to say, it had to be a rough 34,000 miles. |

I was going to say the same thing. Note oil accumulation on the firewall, wrong coil and so on but still a very desirable vehicle.

coils/water pumps skip haney in Fla. send him the water pumps from the engine and look for an original coil to send to him to rebuild. oil on firewall means a lot of blow by which means the engine has a lot of run time. looking at the truck and owning several "jailbars" this truck was rode hard and put up wet or it has more miles than indicated

About the mileage shown. Remember, the odometers in these trucks were only 5 digits.

Re: 34,000 mile 1946 Ford Truck for upcoming TV episode
But it’s a farm truck. A lot of short trips a lot of sitting outside a lot of rough ground.
My sister and her husband bought a new ‘48 F1. They used it for a family car until ‘53. It was used mostly twice a day to haul a couple of 10 gallon milk cans from the barn to the milk cooler tank 100 feet in each direction. It just stayed in the barn yard for the cows to rub on. Every few weeks it went 4 miles to tow with corn and oats to be ground for the milk cows and maybe a block of salt n some groceries or other things needed. In ‘59 it had noise coming from the rod bearings, in about 1960 it was junk with just over 20,000 miles on it. Picks are often badly neglected. |

Clean the firewall carefully because that 46 wiring is brittle. You can get a new horn button and horn wire from one of the EV8 parts peddlers. A look at the foot pedal rubbers and accelerator pedal rubber is also a good gauge of mileage if they are worn smooth. Someone else may chime in on this but I believe the horn is not correct, believe 46 trks had a trumpet horn. MAC's antique auto parts will have most of any parts you might need.

The speedo face plate is 1940 pickup. And the water temp gauge with that green bar I’ve only seen on 46-47 Mercury trucks. I agree on the horn. The pickup horn should mount on the left frame rail and is more trumpet-like with a wide straight “bell,” not the trumpets used on the cars.

all stuff mentioned is easily corrected, and yes with a little work it can look like a survivor. pictures of my 41 1 1/2 ton truck with less than 5,000 miles.

I would need to see some very serious documentation before I would accept that 34,000 mile figure as correct. Are there any? When I got my Seagrave, it came with several books of maintenance records covering over 40 years. Small town fire departments are like that. |

Re: 34,000 mile 1946 Ford Truck for upcoming TV episode
Weren't the 1946 models kind of happy collections of pre and immediate post war parts and styles? My seemingly unmolested '46 Tudor had both trumpet and snail horns, for instance - all wired up in the original factory harness. The same car has a firewall mounted radio more common in a Dodge (likely a dealer option) but with an cowl antenna that looks most like the Sportsman type - with which this car would never be confused.
Without knowing the serial number of the truck, I would not be too quick to decide on correct anything that isn't a typical wear item.

Re: 34,000 mile 1946 Ford Truck for upcoming TV episode
My father was on a small town Volunteer Fire Department. As a kid I asked him why the 40 year old Fire truck only had 8000 miles on it. He said that it Never left town unless it went to a local parade in another small town. He also said that it had about 400 hours on it idling as it ran the pump .

Re: 34,000 mile 1946 Ford Truck for upcoming TV episode
Funny, I always thought the braces on my '47 rear fenders were poorly engineered. They do look an awful lot like the ones on this thread with the downward dip which greatly weakens the tension on the steel strap. If the strap went straight to the fender's crown it would be far stronger and a convenient tie down to boot. With 5 titled jailbars to my name and a few partial parts trucks, along with my propensity to keep them 'survivors' makes me the guy he needs. But I'm not interested in going to SD this summer. I hope he finds the right guy. His truck is a very nice example. My half ton could use a few new fenders as well as a new home! Edit: His braces are a little better than mine, but the guys that did either of them should be horsewhipped.
