Trans swap put another way

I have a 1948 F1 with a 6 cylinder flathead and a 4 speed transmission. Can I just remove the 4 speed, leaving the hogshead in place and just plug in a 3 speed in it's place?

No. The three speed uses a different bell housing. I believe on a previous post your question was answered and someone had the correct bellhousing you need.

I guess I have to give up. I'm too confused over the whole thing and it's not fun anymore.
Looks like the 4 speed stays.

Just take the 4-speed out and bolt the 3-speed to the engine, you don't need anything.

Why then is everyone saying it can't be done unless I change the 1/2 bellhousing to one made for a 3 speed? It looks to me that the transmission whether 3 or 4 speed would bolt up to the same 1/2 bellhousing (hogshead) that is already attached to my 6 cylinder motor
Am I wrong?

The hogs head is bolted to the 4 speed by 4 bolts that are accessible from the inside of the hogshead. You have to remove the 4 speed transmission AND hogshead at the half bell in order to remove the hogshead from the transmission. It will then be evident that the three speed will bolt up. Those telling you that you need another half bell aren't paying attention to the fact that you already have an engine and transmission bolted together.

40cpe has it. The 1/2 bell and the hogshead are two different parts. The
hogshead stays bolted to the 4-speed.

Don't give up. You can do this and it will work out fine.
Sometimes the road gets a little bumpy but, it will
smooth out. Hopefully you have some manuals related top your change over.
Be sure to take plenty of photos as you go along so you don't forget something upon reassembly.
I say this because I forgot to install the throw out bearing once, and had to take it all apart again. No fun doing it twice.

i am not positive but i remember the three speed trans for the 6 cyl is different ask van pelt he will know for sure

If your flathead six is the 1941-47 G series, you have to use the gearbox case made for this motor. If you have the 1948-51 H series flathead six, you would need the stamped steel bell housing made just for this engine, and then bolt up the regular top loader or side loader 3 speed gearbox to it.

Well, for one thing, I am not as smart as most of you guys and I need detailed instructions on most things. I also have no experience with anything older than the 60s. So I needed to ask lots of questions to make sure I get this right. I can't afford to do it twice.
