Default F1 steering or rebuild two tooth.

I'm not happy with the results of the refurbishing my 7 tooth steering. I reused the worm and sector but restored all other components, bearings bushings etc.
I have a two tooth column they needs a total rebuild and I'm looking for your experiences with the three options. New worm and sector for the 7 tooth; rebuild the two tooth, but have to change the steering wheel; or lastly, put a modified rebuilt F1 setup. Pros and cons of them all. Would a rebuild of the two tooth using the needle bearing modifications equal the F1 conversion?
Appreciate your experiences -

The advantage of the pickup steering box is that the ratio is much different, so it seems like power steering, although you must turn the wheel a lot more to make the car go where you want it to go. All that might be an advantage or disadvantage to you.
It also is no longer an original car. That may or may not bother you.
I had one of those boxes in my 30 deluxe fordor, but took it out, since I also had other model As and it felt odd to go from one car to the other and notice the difference in steering response.

I have the F-100 box and love it.

I have both F100 Steering Box's and 2 Tooth Boxes installed and can really tell little difference in them.
The 2 Tooth Boxes are completely rebuilt with all new parts ( and have zero play at center) along with a Short Pitman Arm and Teflon bushings in the steering linkage. New balls on the steering arms.
The F100 box is slightly easier to turn due to ratio but is hardly noticeable.
You might be able to locate a early 2 Tooth Box with a splined shaft and not have to replace the steering wheel.
I have converted 7 tooth boxes to 2 tooth to keep the splined steering wheel but it requires a little machine work and fabrication.
I have rebuilt a few 7 tooth boxes but never able to get the play equal to that of a 2 tooth.

Can you use the lights and horn as normal?
Does the horn rod go through the F1 and does the light switch mount to the bottom of the F1.
Or does all that change?
Never seen an F1 steering box, never seen one setup on a Model A, so have no clue

To the best of my knowledge, the one that Randy Gross builds slips right in and uses ALL the stock parts as far as lights and horn and levers.

Randy Gross does the F-100 conversion.

He rebuilds the box and does all the modifications so you still use the horn rod and light switch as original and also used the stock Model A Pitman arm..

A lot of owners in my local club are using the F-100 conversion by Randy Gross with very good results.

Does your Model A steer hard or sloppy or has lots of play? Is your original steering box worn out, or better yet, are you worn out driving your Model A? If so, then it is time to get modern with one of our F100 modified steering boxes. Our boxes will make your vehicle feel like it has power steering! We have been building these for over 28 years with lots of satisfied customers. No alterations required! Bolts right in! Written up in the "Model A Times" publication for their quality, workmanship, and proper fit. Prices vary for 1928-29 and 1930-31. For more info, please include the year of your vehicle and ship to zip code. "Model A Times" and Victoria Bustle articles are available upon request. Email us at [email protected] or call us at (714) 292-8660 for more info. Thanks

Put the F1 steering box in it and never look back.

A properly rebuilt 2-tooth original steering box is my choice. Not only easy to steer, but it also feels right.

Like Bill said, if you have more than one Model A, and they don't all use the same steering box, it will cause great anxiety when you switch from one to the other.

Melsmodel A above is Randy Gross. I bought one to replace my 2 tooth 31 Ford and it did go in without any problems. It fits without any modification. And used the same light and horn rod. I find mine steers a bit earlier, but more importantly, no more play in the wheel. I decided to go the F100 route rather than try and rebuild, because I felt if I didn't replace everything in the 2 tooth box, I might find that I would still be stuck with bad steering. The F100 from Randy did the trick for me. And it doesn't leak either. I'd do it again.
