Re-honing cylinder walls
I'm putting an 8BA back into service that has been sitting for probably 15 years. Pulled the heads and found just a slight amount of oxidation where a couple valves were open. So I'm going to re-ring it with new iron rings.
Qustion: this is a real low mile engine and I can see the cross hatch from the rebuild. I'd like to gently run a brush type hone over the cylinder walls before putting it back together to avoid it smoking and get the new rings to seat quickly. Would 240 or 320 grit be better for the iron rings? Thanks |

Re: Re-honing cylinder walls
Most new rings specify the hone stone and pattern.

Re: Re-honing cylinder walls
Hastings says 220-280 grit.
Plain cast iron is really forgiving...get the crosspattern as close to 45 degrees you can...and most important for a good job get it cleaned after you are done. |

Re: Re-honing cylinder walls
If you go down that road make sure the after cleaning of cyl wall is done correctly no gas diesel or solvent just hot water and tide detergent.

If it was mine, I'd run a rifle brush through the main oil galley tube (have to pull the plugs out) - as well as some brushes through the main galleys. You can't get enough of the dirt/crap out of it . . . only takes one piece of junk to score the bearings. |

Re: Re-honing cylinder walls
Thanks for the replies. After deep cleaning I have always used shop rags dampened with ATF to see what, if anything, remains. Was planning to use go-jo as the home lubricant. Ties in great with a hot water rinse...

Go Jo with no pumice and a flex hone makes for a easy cleanup with hot water. R |
