Default June 7-11 V-8 Club, Chantilly VA National Meet

Hi Everyone, I hadn't seen much mention of it so I thought I'd start a little discussion.

The V-8 Club has an Eastern National Meet scheduled in Chantilly Virginia this summer. Dates are Wednesday June 7th through Sunday June 11th 2017. The hosting Regional Group is RG 96, the Northern Virginia Regional Group. Thanks fellas for stepping up and doing all that work! (Full disclosure, I joined this RG last summer.)

I'm going, fer sure!

Meet information here: http://enm2017.cornerstonereg.com/Home/About

RG Website here: http://www.nvrg.org/

I see there's also a tour leaving from Asheville NC, on the 3rd, ending in Waynesboro on the 6th, optionally going on to Chantilly for the start of the meet. Info on that here: http://www.earlyfordv8.org/images/ev...o%20hotels.pdf

Anyone else thinking of starting a tour from the northeast or western areas?

Let's start the chatter...

Chantilly VA is where the Udvar-Hazy center of the National Air and Space Museum is located. I've been to the NASM on the mall in DC, but never to Udvar-Hazy center. It is where the restoration of aircraft takes place, plus many exhibits that are not at the DC location. https://airandspace.si.edu/udvar-hazy-center

I going to try to make this tour, plus an extra day or two to spend at the UH museum.

Hi Everyone. John, Last time I was at Udvar-Hazy one of my favorite exhibits featured about fifty or more airplane engines. It seemed like there was a 100 yard line of them around the edge of the building. This was over a decade ago. I love aviation and this is one of the world's premium museums.

I am so old I recall seeing several of their items at the Smithsonian's 'Garber Facility' which was very close to historic College Park Airport near the University of Maryland. They had the Enloa Gay disassembled and stored in more than one building during one of my visits.

If you love history don't miss the opportunity to sign up for the tour of Oak Hill mansion. It is the home of James Monroe and has a fabulous history over the last 200 years. It is privately owned and is not open to the public but the owners have opened it up for the 2017 ENM in Chantilly VA. The tour is limited to the first 50 so register early!

Jeff, I'd like to come out to Chantilly and have been discussing it with my father in law. I need to get a hold of you about the offer you threw out to me last August. If we attend we may not bring a car out this time.

I'm planning on having two cars at the meet, like at Gettysburg. Also one trailer for, well, we won't go there... I can only drive one at a time, so Seth, I'd be delighted for you and your crew to use one of mine during the meet. You might even think of flying in because Dulles is very close to the host hotel.

On a related note, I attended a RG 96, Northern Virginia, club meeting last night. They're doing a great job at getting the meet organized from what I could tell. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna have a good time no matter what happens!

Like any of these events, the organizers could breathe a little easier if they had just a few more registrations and hotel guests, so if any of you reading are thinking of attending in any way, you should do it. Even a drive through the parking lot is like attending most car shows.

Jeff & John, My plan is to attend. Alex and I have kicked around the idea of flying into Dulles as well. I spoke with Glenn recently about possibly sharing a hotel room. It's been total chaos around my house this winter with the arrival of baby Olive and our daughter Ainsley keeping us busy. I will talk with my father in law, Alex and the wife to get permission to attend soon. The meet is quickly approaching and the weather here has been so mild, I'm going to get one of the cars out this weekend to stretch her legs.

As a reminder for those folks who prefer some weekend activities during these meets, thought I would mention that the Concourse Judging/Display will be held on Friday, June 9th. Also, later that afternoon there will be a tour to the Cross Farm for a BBQ and a demonstration of the families working antique saw mill. I really enjoyed attending this during the 2007 ENM held in Fairfax, VA.

Then on Saturday, June 10th, there will two good tours to consider during the day, and the awards banquet that evening.

If you decide to stay in the area on Sunday, there are plenty of great family oriented activities/attractions to consider doing.

Get signed up folks, June will be here before we know it!!

Seth, I'm hearing from one of my top sources, back East here in the Mid Atlantic Area, that you and Alex are all signed up and ready to roll. That's good news!

Just a little over two months to go folks, and we'll be heading to Chantilly, Va for the Early Ford V-8 Clubs Eastern National Meet. If you want to have a good time, and see plenty of nice Early Fords, you better get signed up pretty soon .

As John says: "If you want to have a good time, and see plenty of nice Early Fords, you better get signed up pretty soon." The cutoff date for regular registration is May 1st. After that date the fee goes from $85 to $95.

John,

What Seth really meant to say is that he needed to obtain permission from his wife to attend the meet. Surely he wasn't thinking that I'd miss the company of such a fun group of guys and gals.

See you in June!

The national meets are great for touring and sight seeing. The problem, if you can really call it a problem, is that there is so much to see and do packed into a very short time frame. I find myself having to make a tough decision between activities when they conflict. There just isn't enough of me to go around. Of course my wife would say I'm difficult enough as it is, why the need for more?

Agreed. As far as I know we'll be arriving the morning of the 7th and leaving either Saturday night before or after the awards banquet or possibly early Sunday morning. Well see what times the big birds fly into Dulles. Look forward to seeing everyone!

Less than a month to go now folks. If you're still on the fence about attending, jump on over, and get signed up. Looking forward to attending this meet. This will be my last EFV-8 C/A meet untill the 2018 GNM in Dearborn, Michigan.

I need to pull my old Ford out of the mud and pump up the tires. Maybe it will rain to wash it off. It should run if I pull it with the tractor. The darn chickens has been rousting on it. I hate that.

I heard that someone found a speck of dust on one of Rednecks cars about two years ago, and it made the headlines in their local newspaper. The folks in Waynesburg, Pa are still talking about this in disbelief .

We can pick you guys up. Just let us know your ETA.

Just came in from garage for a lunch break. I'm doing a last minute tune up on the 35 fordor before heading for a car show in York, PA tomorrow morning. The distributor had ~ 25k miles since last rebuild so I thought I better freashen it up again. Back to the garage now for final assembly and then a quick trial run. Hopefully it will be running good for the trip to Chantilly on Tuesday morning.

Jm, I'll give one of you guys a call with our ETA. It looks like the airport is close to the hotel. I have never experienced the traffic in that area so it may be a longer commute than I think? I'd like Glenn to show up holding a sign with my name on it like a chauffeur, with a chauffeur hat on as well .

Jeff took a ride down to the hotel a couple weeks ago to check things out in the area. He said the hotel is close to the airport and there was a lot of construction going on everywhere around there, with contractors/construction workers parked along most of the surrounding roads.

LOL...We'll talk to Glenn about making some huge signs and renting a complete chauffeurs outfit. Maybe get his '35 tudor decked out to look like an official airport Limousine .

Yesterday I wash the mud off my Junker and scrub the whitewalls. Do you remember when guys use to paint whitewalls on? Then porto walls. Then there was a trick to get them on correct. I got a old set of mud flaps on my 35 pickup. We went to the Amish country in Ohio last week and I drove the 50 Ford. Should have taken a boat. It rain all the time. The 50 sure got dirty. 5 more days.

The distributor had ~ 25k miles since last rebuild so I thought I better freashen it up again. Back to the garage now for final assembly and then a quick trial run. Hopefully it will be running good for the trip to Chantilly on Tuesday morning.

Hi again Everyone. I was just messing around on Google Earth looking around Chantilly. I noticed one of their next-door neighbors is the Fairfax County Police's Sully District Station. I think I like the sound of that.

Hi Everyone, I posted a couple of days ago about the venue being next door to the police station.

Today I stopped by the venue, and the place was buzzing with activity. I can only speculate but whatever was going on was pretty high security. The hotel seemed to have everything totaliy in control. Like they've done this dozens of times.

Portable 8' chain link fence was put up around the whole property, over 100 private security, probably 30 sheriffs and police officers that I could see. Everyone hanging out making sure nothing got started or would get out of hand.

Outside the property were some folks exercising their first amendment rights and I waved to them.

Hot diggity!

EDIT TO ADD: I guess what I should say is this is a World Class facility that is equipped to host events on a scale that will make our car meet seem like a picnic to them. The venue looks to be top notch!

EDIT AGAIN: This is what was going on: Bilderberg conference.

Trying to get the car trailer ready to go to the National Meet. The wench won't work played with it for half a day and still no-good. Got a new 12,000 lb. to drag my junkers in. Worked all day installing it. It fought me all the way installing the darn thing. I still got all the yards to mow before we leave Tues.. It forecast rain Sunday, Monday and Tuesday so far. I need a nap. I got up at 4:30 this morning to go and have coffee with the group. I started on the trailer at 6AM. I still got to repack the wheel bearings and check the tires for air pressure. The wife is over taking care of her Mother she 92 and Barb has to stay with her. I am half starve because my cooking the dog won't even eat it. I am thinking about putting a sign in the front yard COOK WANTED.Better days ahead I hope.

Jeff, John, Redneck, Seth, et al: The final decision has been made, and Margretha will have a total knee replacement on 12 June. Praying for great weather for the meet, and for a magnificent time to be had by all! Look forward to seeing you at the next meet!

Hi Everyone. Marcus, good vibes and prayers heading your way! And out to all those that need a good break in life right about now. I know you do good work for people every single day you wake up.

I have very warm memories of sitting with the two of you at the movie in '12 (Edit: Oops '14) Gettysburg.

I always enjoy your posts. I can't wait until our path's cross again.

Hi Marcus, sure hoping Margretha's procedure goes well. We'll miss seeing you two at Chantilly. Maybe think about the GNM in Dearborn next year.

PS...I finally got 16" radial tires mounted on those PU rims you delivered to me in Lake Tahoe and they are now on my '35 std tudor sedan. Thanks again for your generosity. Much appreciated.

The 35 is in the trailer after a quick coil change this morning. Pulled it out of the shop to put it in the trailer and stopped dead. No spark, changed coils and now it's gook to go off to Chantilly on Wednesday. Looking forward to seeing you all again.

I will put the car in the trailer tomorrow. Got all the yards mowed. Three hours and all done. Did have help with the edging the sidewalks. The truck full of diesel fuel. I always look forward in going to the National meet. Lots of nice people.

I learn't a good one this last week or so. That is to get it all going about three weeks ahead of time. That allows a bit of wiggle room when plans don't go as you hope/expect.

My tow vehicle ruptured a brake line, then in the middle of that, the tranny cooler line decided to go bye-bye too. (Isn't my driveway pretty?) Didn't have time to get it all together and on the road. So on to plan B.

Easy peasy, drive the car to the meet. It's just that I-270, I-495, and I-66 are just so relaxing to putt along. (Edit to add: I wish the Governor's of MD and VA could grow a pair (or a quad), and put a bridge between the Beltway and Point of Rocks. White's Ferry is fun but not a real route between thriving communities.)

Driving my old cars is the most fun I have these days.

I had a great time meeting up with old and new V-8ing friends, and seeing all their beautiful old Fords. A big "thank you" to the NVRG for all their hard work putting this meet together, you folks did very good.
Hope to see everone next June at the GNM in Dearborn, MI.

Glad you had a good time, John, now the best part was when you landed the winning ticket for the mMrcury raffle last night! If I hadn't been there, what would you have done?? Just to be sure, I will have another one for you at the club meeting on the 20th.

Clem, you need to post a photo of your truck's clock.

It was a good time, even though neither of my V8s made it. It seems that my charging problem has reappeared, if it even was fixed post rewiring.

Here are the few photos I took of the meet. I was too busy helping out to take too many photos, unfortunately.

There were some very nice cars there. I didn't count, but the best represented appeared to be 35s, 40s, shoeboxes and 36s. Note JM in the photos of the 35s, which is appropriate. The last photo is the band at the BBQ at the Cross Farm. The Knuckle Dusters from Washington County, MD. A very good old time string band.

Well I am home now safe and sound. All went well not much was said about the next meet next year. Someone said it in Dearborn, Mich. That one place I don.t care to go. I will half to say last year meet was nicer meet. Better food for one thing. Half the price. Was offered $50.00 cash for my Junker. I almost took him up but got cold feet.

The Eastern National Meet was a huge success and a a lot of fun. This was my 4th national meet and every time I have more fun than the last. Thanks to the Northern Virginia Regional group for a great meet. My V8 friend Alex and I flew into Dulles Tuesday and Jeff Horrocks (VeryTangled), John Mason and Glenn Sanders picked us up at Dulles in a 1936 Ford pheaton and 1935 Ford fordor. HUGE thanks to these men for being so kind.

If you're not a V8 club member or are and haven't attended a meet, sign up. Become a member and attend these events. We drive these V8 Fords and see some incredible if not at times once in a life time sights while doing so. I promise you will have a great time. There are often so many great places to tour you have a hard time picking the ones you want to attend.

Thanks again to Jeff Horrocks for the use of his 1935 Ford fordor for the week. That was a very generous offer I could not refuse! I hope to see all of you fine people next year!

p.s. I have some photos to upload but the Fordbarn is not allowing that to happen at this time. When Ryan gets things fixed I will post some photos here.

Same to you Milford. It's a lot of fun driving on these tours. I'll bring a car to Dearborn. This was my 4th meet and as long as my schedule permits I plan to keep attending. On my bucket list is a cross country trip like John and Frank completed to Lake Tahoe. I had a great time in Chantilly.

Hi Everyone. Yup, it was a very nice time, especially the people. My 'Road Family.'

There were so many memorable moments. Dulles was one of them, things were happening quickly and we didn't get a snapshot. But at the awards banquet, a gentleman, I am ashamed I don't know his name, but he said he'd driven to, like, 33 of these meets. He had a set if mileage pins that was really stunning. Like two feet of 'em. He summed it up for me when he said he lives for these gatherings. I had to choke back a tear. This was the first time I got a mileage pin, I've enclosed trailered (my open Phaeton) to every other meet.

Many congratulations and thanks to the NVRG for hosting the event. It's a huge task. Also thanks to all the the National Capitol RG members for running the Vehicle Safety Check station and setting up/collecting orange cones from the field and trailer lots.

Of course life-long friendships develop at each meet. Seth and Alex and I connected at Gettysburg and through the 'Barn. I was totally at ease handing him the keys, and the car left the show field in the same shape it arrived, except maybe for having gotten a wash. Seth worked the water hose part of the job when we did both of my cars, that's the kind of guy he is. He put gas in the car, and bought Metro passes and breakfast too! Alex was a valuable crew-member, perfect navigation skills, and hooked-us up with Uber's to and from the Vienna Metro (we went exploring on the Mall Thursday), for a total cost of less than two bucks! I finally got to hang with mhsprecher! We're almost neighbors but can't seem to connect very often, all my fault for sure. Glenn and Frank, well, you have to see that in person to know what I mean.

One very generous moment was just before the meet broke-up, JM walked around the '35 I bought June 10 last year, the one Seth and Alex shared, and schooled me with his trained eye and brain. Then hopped in and took it around the block, then debriefed me! Awesome information you can't get every day.

I could go on, but, if you didn't go, you missed a great time!

Seth, was good seeing you there. Myself and the family had a great time. The weather was perfect and a lot of nice cars. Found a few goodies in the swap meet as well. Hats off to all that helped put on the meet.

Those that don't attend these meets don't know what they are missing. Can't wait for Dearborn!! Little known fact, for those that pre-register for Dearborn before October get entered into a drawing for a set of Coker Tires!!

I have to add that in my opinion Michael/35fordtn/Third Gen Automotive, rolls with the best looking crew at the meet! Three generations of lovely ladies, and two generations of straight-up gentlemen. I tip my hat.

Michael also contributed generously towards sponsoring the meet.

In fact, every person who attended contributed generously in some capacity or another, whether with good spirit or strong back or organizational skills, and that's another thing that makes these so memorable.

Got home ok doing about 490 miles in 8.5 hours. Always a pleasure seeing everyone. Thanks for putting me in the same category as Glenn. It was great to see some younger guys like Alex and Seth getting involved in the judging. Alex helped us judge the exterior of the 35 and 36 cars. Danny Driskel was a good teacher and I hope Alex feels confident enough to sign up at the next meet.
I will confess I was not overly enthused about going but knew I would not regret it. All of these meets have left me with memorable experiences and new friends. The V8 club has some of the finest people you will ever meet.

Frank,

Great to see you. Your avatar is terrific.

As a working stiff, it's hard to take the time to attend these meets. I have to say I liked the dates this year as it wasn't too darned hot, although it warmed right up after this weekend

Hi Everyone, about Frank's Avatar. Yes it's a can of Frank Miller Nut Loosener, and it's a real product not something he made up. Frank said he got it as a gift, if I recall.

Another thing is the part you're seeing is basically oil-can sized, but the part out of the picture, going up, is about two feet or longer and pointed like an old-school locomotive oil can would be. It's a amazing artifact, and suitable for the amazing guy Frank is.

Cecil, thanks for selling me the winning ticket.....again....., since I actually thought the last ticket I bought from you was the winner, and buying this ticket was just to help the Foundation make its goal.
Anyway, I really need to win that Mercury so I can drive it to Alaska.

ps...Cecil, how many "Brownie Points" do I get for sending my friends to you at the Awards Dinner to buy raffle tickets??

Hope these pics work. I met a guy on the a site who had this can. I had a Frank Miller non freeze as my avatar and he inquired about it. I had to trade a Model A tire pressure and oil pressure gauge for it. I pilfered them from my dad's garage. No problem as his name is Frank also and the cans are prominently displayed there.

We finally got home from our trip to Virginia yesterday. We left on may 30th and traveled in our F-150 with air conditioning! Did sight seeing on the way out to the meet and on the way back. The Eastern Meet was wonderful. Saw a lot of old friends, made some new ones, and visited with a friend who used to live in Napa, Ca. Kudos to the NVRG and other helpers for putting on a great meet. The tours were absolutely great. We loved the Air and Space Museum and the tour to the Cross Farm. It was well worth the 3000 mile trip out and back. Stopped by the Grand Canyon on the way home which had always been on the "bucket list". Thanks again for the great time. Tom Johnston

Hi Everyone, Glenn I was trying to say both of you are very unique individuals, and fun to hang with! You've just gotta be prepared to see some stuff you don't see every day. (Unless you are Glenn or Frank, they do see it.)

Finally home. First Chantilly and then out to Kansas City for AACA Grand National by way of Dayton, Indy, St. Louis, then back through Nashville to NC. After the Udvar-Hazy in Washington and then the Air Force museum in Dayton, I think I have seen enough airplanes for a while. Chantilly was fantastic and it was great to see old friends. JM, Jeff, Glen, Seth, and Alex good to see you again and thanks for your offers of assistance with my crappy coil. Now it's on to Dearborn to do it all over again.

Bob, good to see you again at Chantilly. I really enjoyed the Udvar-Hazy Museum, the James Monroe Home tour, and the Cross Farm tour and BBQ. Congratulations on receiving another award with your beautiful 35 CS. See you at Dearborn in about 11 months .
