Seeking a jack for 1933 sedan
I need to get a working jack for my 1933 ford model B sedan.
What is the best approach? Get an original jack? Get a replica jack? Get a modern jack? Note: it will have to be kept under the rear set cushion. |

Re: Seeking a jack for 1933 sedan
As the restorer of early Ford V-8 tools advises: don't actually try and use the original jacks as jacks! Go to Harbor Freight and buy a cheap aluminum fast pumping jack, they're lots safer and a lot easier to use. While you're there, buy a couple of jack stands to use in concert with the jack as an insurance policy recalling that all man made objects are subject to failure at some point.

Get an original jack and keep it safe in the garage as part of the original parts for the car. Don't plan on using it. Ask around or post a wanted ad for a late model scissors jack and a couple of high quality jack stands. Maybe a trip to a wrecking yard.

My son told me that many new cars don;t even carry balloon spare tire anymore but they give you a can of Fix a Flat! Do any antique car users use fix a flat rather than use a spare tire? |

Compared for size and for use with a 1933 ford? Do bottle jacks come with tops that can fit securely under the axle of the car? Oh should I rely on fix a flat in case of a flat tire? |

AAA plus membership, or a scissors jack from the junkyard and a lug wrench, or your handcrank should have lug wrench on the other end.

Re: Seeking a jack for 1933 sedan
A bottle jack will fit under the rear axle but I doubt it would go under the front. They have very little travel so putting it under the frame won't work. There are great little jacks used in late model cars, They collapse and use very little room. I have one from a 85 Chevy.
I carry fix a flat in my roadster because it has no spare. I would have a jack if I had a spare I may have an original jack. |

Re: Seeking a jack for 1933 sedan
The reason new cars can get by with no spare and just a can of "Fix-aFlat" is because they all have tire pressure monitoring systems. This is a light on the dashboard that goes on when a tire gets only a couple of pounds low. Leaks, you can fix. blowouts, not so much. Blowouts usually are caused by driving too long on a very low tire. The tire heats up and fails in a major way. With a TPM system, the driver is alerted of the problem long before a blowout would occur.
BTW, the first thing I did when I discovered our new car didn't have a spare of any kind (or a jack or any tools), was to buy all of the above. |

Re: Seeking a jack for 1933 sedan
I carry a couple short 2 x 6's to drive a flat up on, so I can get a jack under axle. Also need to block car so it doesn't roll off jack. I use a jack from a 90's F-150 - looks similar to a bottle jack, but mechanical.
Not real stable, not real safe, be careful. I like the HF jack idea, assuming one doesn't mind lugging it around. |

I don't think a can of "Fix-a-Flat" will work very well with a tube in the tire.

Re: Seeking a jack for 1933 sedan
Sorry, I overlooked your sentence about wanting to carry the jack in your car. Hence, please ignore my recommendation above as it is for garage work only. A scissors jack is your best and safest bet for an on-board jack, as stated above.

I have a friend that is in the process of putting up a complete set of 1933 ford tools for sale. As soon as he gets a price I will post of Ford barn.

Frank, good suggestions above. My personal choice for under the seat is the scissor jack from an import (junkyard). Also two or more cut offs from a two by four or a 4 by 4 or a brick. Something to block the opposite wheel. Remember the screw on the scissor works nicer when greased.

FRANK....Do you recon Fix-A-Flat would fix THIS tire? Just go to a junk yard and get a brand new (probably never-used) scissors jack out of a new Toyota for $10.00. DD |

Tire monitoring systems are great, Only adds a $100 for a tire repair when they fail.
