Ford 2G and 3G. The "fire issue" with 2G is corrected with the new after market wiring/connector available. Put out great voltage at idle to run A/C and a cooling fan if used.

Could you provide a bit more info on the fire issue? I'm going to use a 3G on the 302/AOD combo that's going in my Ranch Wagon. Thanks.

I put a 2G on a 64 Fairlane and had no problems with it.

These are different models of alternators used on Fords. I don't know the differences, but I think one of them is output. Try Google for an explanation of the different models

2G was used in 80s/90s Taurus and some other models. They were the first effort to replace the low out first generation alternators Ford used. The wire harness was "cheaped" and under the heavy load of the many gadgets it would burn the harness at the alternator. Ford did a TSB to correct the issue. Nice part is they bolt in where the 1G sat, have an internal regulator and put out good at idle power. They are in the 125 amp range. The upgraded harness for the 2G is readily available.

The 3G is the latest and best, higher output, internal regulator but is physically larger then the 1G and 2G. Care must be taken with sourcing. There are a few models that have the standard 1G mounting. Do a look on Rock Auto, they have good pictures of the alternators.

A quick tutorial on Ford alternators. I found the 3G for my Ranchero on Rock Auto for much less then the power master. The pulley will swap to a single/dual groove no sweat.

I use the PowerGen alternator that looks like a generator in my old generator equipped cars. They are expensive but I am very happy with the performance and I like the fact that the unit looks period correct. If you are one of those that doesn't care about that, then you can put on a later model alternator for much less money.

If you’re running a sbf, a 3g is a great upgrade. I went from a power master that lasted a few years to a 3g. You’ll need to upgrade your charge wire though if running high amps. It is bigger too, I had to modify my brackets a little to make it fit. I also went with a slightly smaller pulley to help charge at idle so my lights wouldn’t dim while idling.
