Is there something or a process I can use/do to keep the rubber on the steering wheel from getting all over my hands? What causes it? Oxidation?

Some people paint them. I just put a real nice leather cover on it, when that got worn I aded a second so now it's a bit padded.

You can just clean it a couple times a year with a household cleaner.. Its a common problem.. I didn't mind the dirty hands,but, black streaks on the pants are too much..

I clean ours as needed with acetone.
usually about twice a year or less.

clean it then wipe on some linseed oil a couple of times . not too thick .

I cleaned mine, then coated it with a couple of coats of floor wax. No more dirty hands, and no change in appearance!

Another suggestion from a previous post that I tried and worked quite well for me...I used hand lotion spread liberally on the wheel. (I grabbed my wife's "Aveeno" hand lotion because she claims that it works very well on her hands.) After spreading it around, I wiped the excess off with a clean rag and then repeated the process. The first few days, the wheel felt a little funny (i.e. slippery, "greasy"), but eventually it dried to a nice lustre. I drove the car on Saturday on a rainy, wet and humid day. These have always been the worst for my steering wheel. I can honestly say that there was no stickiness, black on the hands or other problems with the wheel. It was completely normal...

Clean it well with TSP and paint it with semi gloss black

I have heard of afew poeple that have put a coat or two of Thompsons water seal on them. Problem is they become abit glossy after that. I do not know how long this treatment works either. Rod

Way to keep your hands clean, make your daughter drive.

I wonder if its the same as old running boards? I worked the dead rubber off with lac thinner and rubbing compound. Might try it.

I wouldnt paint it with black as has been suggested ; looks obviously 'painted'.
Did mine with a few rubbings of natural beeswax & no problems ever since.
