Maverick 8" with Pinto 3rd member?
Have located a Maverick 8" but to get the 3:55 ratio I want seller said he would have to use a 4 bolt Pinto 3rd member with it, is this a bad idea? Am running 135HP flathead.

The Mavrick is 56.5 small width. If you are running and automatic its ok.Just don,t pop the clutch.
3.55 good for big tire and look better. 4 bolts wheels are problem. I think you would be better with the Mustang, with all the wheel the same you can rotate them. with a 7" bs say, 4 leaves to out side 3 " with 6" BS with 3.5 leves 2.5 this is better choice in wheels 6x15 |

You can get 3:50 gears for the Maverick 8 inch rear at any of the major parts suppliers. I put a set in mine that had a 2:79 ratio in it.

do a search on the internet and you can find numerious new 8" gear sets for sale. 8" is smaller version of 9" and will stand lots of abuse in a light car

Re: Maverick 8" with Pinto 3rd member?
Street Flatheads are not going to harm the 8" rear no matter how you drive IMHO. 8" rears are all I've run in my modified flathead powered cars.
That being said, look for V8 Mustang II cars - they had 8" rears with 3:40 and 3:50 gearsets. I used to have the tag numbers but I can't put my finger on them at the moment. You can google 8" rears and find a website that will give you that info. Now, these are getting harder and harder to find and these rears are used in some racing circles as well, making them even harder to locate. But, just searching Craigslist and a few other websites, I've found 2 3:50 and 1 3:40 8" complete hogshead gearsets. They are out there ... If you are not wanting to spend the time, just buy a ring and pinion from Summit and have it installed in the 8" hogs head you have. Yes it's more money but alot less hassle than using 4-lug rear axles. Finally, a few more options: although overkill in a flathead powered car, 9" rears have many, many more gear ratios available with plenty of used 3:23, 3:50, and 3:70 hogsheads out there used - you just have to be aware of the number of splines when purchasing a hogshead as there are two versions; S10 rears w/3:42 gearsets are plentiful, usually way cheaper than than Ford 9", fit nicely, and are about the same width (maybe a tad wider ? ) vs the Mav rear. |

I have a 67mustang rear 59.25, and a Granada with 2.78 gears. I plan on using the 2.78 gears out of the Granda rear, Putting in Mustang rear, keeping the mustang axles. And using 14 inch wheel. The Ford 53 f100 was 61" i think it will work the bed is 48" so its close. Any way I,d get gears for the mustang housing. |

Do you ask your dentist about brain surgery? All kidding aside, you would probably get a better response in the "Hot Rods and Customs" section of this forum (which will link you to HAMB). I am surprised you didn't get "roasted" like the poor guy that asked about putting an Iron Duke in his Model A.

I believe the Pinto had an entirely different rear end.

Re: Maverick 8" with Pinto 3rd member?
When I raced a modified Pinto we turned over 7000 RPM with the stock 3rd member on a 1/4 mile dirt track and didn't ever hurt one. I wouldn't be afaid to use one if it's the best fit otherwise.

How would you use a Pinto 3rd member with an 8" Maverick housing? As already stated, Pinto rear ends were completely different.

Re: Maverick 8" with Pinto 3rd member?
I have an 8" with 4 lug axles. I always thought it was from a Pinto. It has 4.11 gears. The pumpkin looks identical to my Maverick. The plan is to put the 4 lug rear pumpkin in the Maverick. It would be used with a 5 speed. I hope this is going to work. Any idea of what the rear is?
