1940 Windshield Seal
If done a search of the forum and everyone recommends Bob Drake as the best windshield seal. Problem being is Drake is Out Of Stock. What experience has folks had with Carpenter and Steel Rubber windshield seals.
Thanks for any and al help. |

NO! Don't go to Drake for ANY rubber. It's all from offshore. Order from Carpenter. He makes all his own rubber and it far better than Drake's. Especially nice windshield seals for the '40.

Thank you, seems like quality isn’t what it use to be or as one would expect these days.

Re: 1940 Windshield Seal

Carpenter's rubber products are still fine quality.

Lots of leaking under dash onto floor. Has original windshield seals with lots of age cracks, thought I would have to replace them. But I traced the leak to be something else: Hood-to-cowl gasket was replaced by previous owner, but just screwed on, no sealant under it. And the holes in the cowl are now a little over-sized for the tiny sheet metal screws. Each of the screws was carrying water thru the cowl into the cabin. I put a dab of sealant at each screw hole. No more leaking. Car is still wearing the old original glass seals. |

Re: 1940 Windshield Seal
My 40 has been going together with all Drake rubber... no problems with the fit or installation.
And I will add I've been using the Drake seals with glass from Auto Glassics in Oregon; everything has fit like it should. Last edited by Hal Beatty; 01-23-2020 at 03:15 PM. |

Re: 1940 Windshield Seal
Jay, that is very interesting. Never thought of that.
RE: windshield seal. I used this sealer when I installed by 40 windshield seal many years ago. I put it in the glass groove in the rubber and underneath where it overlapped the body sheet metal. Wiped off excess with kerosene. DON'T USE SILICONE! Last edited by 19Fordy; 01-23-2020 at 11:22 AM. |

Re: 1940 Windshield Seal
Windshield... best comes from Carp.
Rear windshield, Drake. Carp's are too long as if they were stretched when released from the mold.

Re: 1940 Windshield Seal
Permatex also makes a product that I used that worked out well. Part no. 81730, Flowable Silicone Windshield & Glass Sealant. Unlike regular silicone calk, it actually flows into the leaks and stops them.
