Clutch pedal adjustment for "play"

Am new owner of restored 1928 Model A Roadster. Clutch pedal has no play and I need to adjust to approximately 1-inch free play. Les Andrews Volume I (page 2-8) states placing "...small hydraulic jack under the clutch actuating arm." Does this mean under the "arm" itself as in his accompanying drawing on page 2-8? Or on the housing that surrounds the arm? And how does one know if the arm is raised enough to "...relieve tension on the pedal clevis rod?"

You want to raise the actuating arm until the tension is removed so you can pull the clevis rod pin , this will allow you to increase or decrease pedal free play by turning the clevis rod , I just did mine , didn't have to use a jack , I could move it enough by hand to remove the pin.

Psavello - I literally just went through this last week/weekend for the first time. The small arm is under tension. You won't get anything adjusted without the jack. Put the jack under the arm (not the housing) and lift it about 1/4 - 1/2 inch. That's all. Then you'll find that removing the cotter and clevis pins are relatively easy. Keep the jack there, though, because when you adjust the rod and try to realign it with the arm, it won't happen unless you have the arm jacked up a bit. Good luck!

Piece of advice. If you have the original arm it is cast and may break on you at some point, you will then lose the clutch. There is a modern steel arm that is produced so if you have to remove it for some reason consider using the modern steel version. Ask me how I know....
