Default Oil pan removal on 47 Flathead

Hey guys,

I have seen some post lately about oil pan removal. Well, I am in the process of removing the pan on my car, 47 V8 Super Deluxe to replace the pan gaskets, and the worn out dipstick boss which is currently on back order from Bob Drake.

I have the pan almost out but it's hitting on 2 areas.

I removed the 2 front motor mount bolts, raised the engine and shimmed between the water pumps and mounts to keep the engine raised. I have not removed the 2 lower hoses.

A friend of mine just replaced the pan gasket on a 41 Flathead and he didn't remove the hoses or drain any coolant.

The car is up on ramps, and I can almost get the pan off, but the shallow part of the pan is hitting on the drag link, and the rear of the pan (the wall that mounts against the cork seal), will almost clear the flywheel.

For you all who have removed the pan with the engine still in the car, can you please share the secret?

Thank you in advance for any replies!!

Kevin

'Shinerunner - While I don't have a '47, I do have a '46 and I believe they're similar. When I pulled the pan on mine, I had the frame supported by axle stands and allowed the suspension to "hang down". This moved the axle away from the pan and I had to remove one end of the drag link, if I remember correctly. Hope this helps.

Along with what Henry says, you might also try turning the crankshaft a bit...depending on the position that the counterbalance is, can prevent the pan from coming off.

Thank you guys!!

I really appreciate the information. Fordscript, I didn't think about turning the crankshast lastnight and I think that is part of my issue. Will be doing some more work on it this evening.

The engine needs to go up over 2"s, remove breather cap, and the front counter balances have to be DOWN, the wish bone propped down and pan should drop off.
Not sure about cross over pipe as I have dual exhaust. I never had to drop the steering arm that I remember. G.M.
