Default Ol' Ron & JWL ideas on CHAMPION HEADS

I recently acquired a very nice 8 BA with a too wild cam and CHAMPION
cast iron heads. The heads are kind of cool and all that BUT are they
any good for anything but looking cool.

Are they like these?

Sorry Charlie, I have never used or tested such heads.

I will say if they raise the compression ratio in a mostly stock port and valve and RPM engine they will enhance performance. And, they are VERY cool/rare/interesting.

Pete's got it....those are the heads now sitting on my bench....looking cool.....I'll CC
the chambers John and see what's what. At a glace it appears as though the spark

plug location is different than stock.
Zach...the motor I removed from my pretty much uncut '32 p/u is a 286 cu in circle
track motor built in '54 and run at OSWEGO SPEEDWAY for a short time then installed
in the '32. The cam settles down about 2500 rpm. Up Oswego way the area is still

pretty rural but in my neck of the woods I'd need a padded cell every time I drove the

'32. I will let you know what cam it is ASAP. BTW...130 to 140 pounds in each cyl.

Sounds like a neat engine. Good pickup.

Have seen a set on an engine quite a few years back. I was supprised to see cast iron instead of aluminum. That alone is a plus. However, I have no idea what the combustion chamber looks like. I would hope the plug was moved closer to the transfer area,. Good luck

Guys,
Thanks for the input, I'll second what Ron says about iron being a plus.
I'm sold on EAB heads dialed in to the motor they are on. When the heads come back from blasting I'll cc them and check the plug location.

They look cool as Hell to me . . . I'd run them for sure. In the end, the cast iron should generate a bit more HP than the same exact head in Aluminum (due to keeping more heat in the chamber) - but who knows. Post some pictures of the chambers - would love to see them.

Charlie,

Just curious, have you seen examples where it was off and what would you do if you found there was a problem?

Denny,
As Ron has said a change in plug location towards the transfer area would
be a positive. My comment about plug location difference was not to suggest something
done in error but a move in the right direction. These heads date back to the mid 50's
and I'm not sure if plug location theory back then is what is realized today.

Charlie,

The reason I asked is that I am quite interested in plug location. As you probably know, I like Edmunds heads because they move the spark plug just far enough from the exhaust valve to allow me to use extended tip plugs. I have used them on the last two engines I have built, and am very satisfied with the results. My '51 is in it's third year with this setup with good results and no problems.
