Jack we all have to learn some new once-in-awhile. We don't know until some one tells us.

I've been around "A's" along time and never heard the phrase GAV until a couple of years ago.

The main reason that so many have problems with timing is because they are trying to set the timing with the points and completely disregard direction of backlash while they screw up where the rotor tip points after the cam screw is tightened .

When I was a kid, I never messed with the GAV that much. I've learned a lot about fine tuning over the years. Back when I used Marvel carburetors they mostly ran good and I must have had the GAV in a good place because I never changed it at all.

I replaced the manifold gaskets today but she still is acting up. While she sat for two months due to a starter/flywheel problem I never fiddled with the distributor or carbuerator so I am still in the dark. I know what the GAV is and use it as necessary.

Rarely do I ever see a GAV (not a Ford term) that works exactly like Ford's instructions on how to use it. Those Gav's have usually been screwed in too hard over the years, umpteen times, and also screwed out too hard thus booggering things up some.

Not too worry, usually. Just adjust wherever the engine runs the best while you're warming up or while you're going down the road.

I always referred to it as a fuel air/mixture. I'm originally a T guy and that is how I was trained. I am familiar with it.

John the GAV is just like the valve on top of the T carb (at least that was the way my old T had it). Ask away on questions you don't have answers for. That way I won't feel so bad when I ask all the questions I do.

I cleaned and gapped points and plugs. Am using fresh gas with MMO. Tried different settings on GAV (the knob turns the rod). Replaced Bakalite distributor body. New manifold gaskets. Compensated for backlash when I retimed it (it does not over heat).
Runs fine down the road once warmed up.
Could it be a stuck valve until she warms up?
