Default Penetrating Oils

I thought that you’ all would find this interesting!

Penetrating Oils Machinist's Workshop Mag recently published some information on various penetrating oils. The magazine reports they tested penetrates for break out torque on rusted nuts.

They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrates with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.

*Penetrating oils ........... Average torque load to loosen*

No Oil used ................... 516 pounds
WD-40 ..................... ... 238 pounds
PB Blaster .................... 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ...............127 pounds
Kano Kroil .................... 106 pounds
ATF*-Acetone mix............53 pounds

The ATF-Acetone mix is a " mix-your-own-brew" -- 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. As noted many times in FordBarn threads! Note this "home brew" released bolts better than any commercial product in this one particular test.

A local machinist group mixed up a batch and they all now use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is almost as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price.

Steve from Godwin-Singer says that ATF-Acetone mix is best, but you can also use ATF and lacquer thinner in a 50-50 mix.
*ATF=Automatic Transmission Fluid

Great information! I've filed it away for future reference.
Could you post the link to the report?

A fellow that owns a parts house told me the best penetrating fluid was brake fluid. I have never tried it tho. Charles

Anybody ever scientifically tested the "candle wax melted into the studs" method? I have not done that yet but planning on it for the next tear down.

Have used it many times on applications such as pipe plugs and stubborn bolts and studs. You get it hot with a good heat supply and as it is cooling off quench a couple of times with a candle and the wax wicks down the threads and frees it up.You should wait for the item to be warm to the touch before removal.Works very well.Acetone mix is high on the list also.

Just posted this on the Shoebox Ford forum. Heard about using the ATF mix before but nice to see the comparison. Thanks for the info. Bob
