Default Back fire

Probably a simple answer ? What is causing my engine to backfire through the carburetor . Newly installed dist. and not wanting to mess with setting.

Check that you reconnected the spark plug wires correctly after you installed the distributor....

Sounds like first place to look is 180* out. Those distributor "button" offsets are hard to see some times. (Ask me how I know!!)

Wink Re: Back fire

Still wrong. Went down and checked the crab cap to see if I missed anything with the wires and found nothing . Someone suggested you may be 180 0ff ? Not likely to happen without breaking the housing when tightening bolts. Idles quite smooth, but still popping back for whatever reason ? I'll bet this is a fun truck to drive if it ever runs right !

stuck intake valve
bad coil/condensor

Try a different condenser.

Also do a compression check to see if a intake valve is hanging up. Or better... put a vacuum gauge on it to get a reading.

Many, if not most, backfiring is caused by a vacuum leak. Check the carb base gasket, and any hoses or taps on the intake manifold. It may be due to a breached intake manifold gasket or a warped gasket surface on the manifold itself. The above suggestion to try a manifold vacuum gauge is a good one.

Getting closer to being a street rod with a small block by the minute ! Two plugs (drivers side #1 and pass. side #3) are not firing, new dist rebuild, two new caps, different plugs, blue spark jumping a good 3/8 " even to my finger and block. Idles great on six cyl. Is it maybe time to change over to GM's 8-6-4 system when not needing full power ? This is a real head scratcher. Anybody on here want to make a paid house call ? Frustrated to say the least.

From the driver's seat it is. I know on the cap it is the second one down on the left viewed from the front.

No blame directed at you Jim, I think what you did is fine. Just a quick question though, is the little rubber (gasket) on back around the brass plug of the dissy important to seal the vacuum line from leaks ?
