Default Just for fun.

I think I will take my stock 52 Merc into the local Ford dealer with a problem, and watch the faces of those 20 something Tech writers.

Should be fun.

I get that laugh every month when I take Old Henry into Jiffy Lube to get his 19 fittings greased and even more so when it's time for an oil change. Love it.

Our dealership could work on it but it would be a long drive! I've got two techs and one would be lost where the other was kind of a farm kid and loves stuff like that. When I got my 48 it had the wrong solenoid and he figured it out pretty quick. I think for the young guys it's too simple. My nephew is on this board and a tech at a new car dealership. He has a 48 that he seems to be figuring out pretty quick. In fairness in the new car stores today there are many people that are not car people. Still a few of us old dinosaurs in the business that have ate ,slept and breathed cars since we were pups....

When people ask me about my old Ford's, I tell them that "if Social Security paid me better, I might be able to afford a newer car"....

On my 35 I've added the Greyhound hood ornament and on several different occasions I've been asked if the car was a Jaguar.

I once had a 20 something mechanic look under the hood of my 1967 Sunbeam Alpine and confidently identify the alternator relay control box as the computer! I gently corrected him informing him that the average computer in 1967 was probably the size of the car. He could not comphrehend that any car could run without a computer !

A few years ago I drove my 1931 Model A through the lot at my local Ford dealership. A sales guy was outside, I stopped and told him I was thinking about updating to a newer model. He just smiled as if "yeah right you smart ass".

I guess we should not be too surprised that younger folks know nothing of an engine that has not been in production for over 60 years. Funny though, the looks you get when you mention your vehicle has a "flathead", and two water pumps? Points, condensors, carburetors? All becoming museum pieces as time passes. I'm doing my bit to keep my nephews educated on the old Fords (and Mercurys).

Easy there Ralph, I'm 35 years old and have been playing around with old Fords and flatheads since I was old enough to see over the steering wheel of my grandpa's cars. Of course I'm just giving you a hard time.

By the way, I like the photo you posted with the family and the car. Which one is you?

Seth, great to hear a younger guy is keeping the interest in flatheads alive.
In that photo I posted, in fact I am not in it. Must have been in school that day.
I tried to blend the 1964 and the 2015 photos together as they were taken in almost the same location. Not quite successful this time but I'll try it again.

When I had my '30 Model A, I drove it to the store. A child about 12 asked if the car was a "Disneyland car!" He didn't think it was real.

Well for all you folks complaining about the auto mechanics today not knowing about old cars: What do you do when your new car stops running and dies on the side of the road?? You get out and lift the hood, give a blank stare at the engine, scratch your arse and then call a flatbed to take it to the garage where one of these young guys fixes it in no time and you are back on the road. LOL

We have a kid about 20 or 21 years old at the local NAPA. He knows more about the old cars than I do. GREAT fellow to deal with.
