Re: Penetrating Oils
I admit that I have not used the ATF/Acetone mix (it is on my today's Bucket list) but the product I can speak very highly about is Fluid Film.
You spray it on and it bubbles up / foams up and gets right down through the rust. A few of the local towns use it in large volumes on the snow removal equipment any of the cable controls open chains on the salt / sand spreaders get sprayed with this, with this type of equipment most of the rust comes after winter is over went it is parked till the next year. After cleaning the equipment they spray this on ( yes they have tried other products also )But none stay on till the next season like Fluid Film Does. I have also used it on the inside workings of the roll up Windows of some older equipment that we have had. Before spraying could hardly roll the windows up,after using the spray they rolled up like I sent it to the local glass shop. In the past It was only available at the areas large truck repair shop. But this year my local NAPA carries it in it's own Fluid Film cans,Not repackaged in a NAPA can. |

Re: Penetrating Oils
Steve.....
I mixed up some just a bit ago in a plastic sprayer of my Wife's (she's really going to be happy about that, but....) and was wondering.....would this also work on the flange nuts for my '40 Ford crossover pipe that attaches to the exhaust manifold flange ? It'll be sitting for a few months, so should I just give it a spray shot every so often ? Many thanks Mike42 |

Re: Penetrating Oils
I am partial to PB Blaster but have used the Acetone/ATF mix pretty good. I'll probably put that mix in my Sure Shot because it is cheap on the bulk. I also have used a product called Rust-Buster, it comes in a little bottle with a straw that comes out. It works really well, but is such a small quantity that I hardly use it.

Re: Penetrating Oils
I have Experimented with ATF/Acetone 50-50 mix, and can tell you that
ATF itself stays wet, out in the open air, for months... Acetone, on the other hand evaporates very-very fast in the open air. In the summer heat, Acetone alone, sprayed on an object, will evaporate before your very eyes. Cold weather keeps it from evaporating quite so fast. Try it yourself, put an ounce of ATF in a small open lid of some kind, it will stay wet for weeks. Put an ounce of Acetone in a small open lid, and it will evaporate 1000 times faster than ATF. So what good is a 50/50 mix when one part of the mix is gone quickly, unless you want to spray your rusty part every hour, before the Acetone evaporates. I've used ATF and fuel oil, mixed 50/50 and that lasts, and keeps working together for quite a long time on rusty or stuck parts. .

Re: Penetrating Oils
The idea is to thin the atf so it will penetrate where the pure atf will not. Then the acetone does evaporate leaving the oil to do its job. Marv

Re: Penetrating Oils
All of this is pointless until someone proves that anything can soak into a rust swollen fastener that’s in an equally rust swollen hole.
There is hundreds if not thousands of pounds of presser involved here working to keep it out …. Iv been convinced for years now nothing gets in tell its broke lose or heated. Last edited by 296 V8; 11-27-2012 at 01:04 AM. |

Ya, that might be good enough if the rust is very-very lite. The fuel oil thins the ATF and then Penetrates and stays wet Much Much LONGER. .

Re: Penetrating Oils
Pentrating fluids-its all about the solvents. Solvent penetrates and brings oil along for the ride. If the oil is good, the parts will come apart more easily. Spray cans have more solvents (and propellants) than gallon cans of the same product, so you could see a difference in performance.

Re: Penetrating Oils
When using the Automatic Transmission Fluid and Acetone mix, always remember to shake it, before using. It will seperate in your squirt can.

Re: Penetrating Oils
I let the 50/50 mix soak then hit the part with a torch. Sizzles like crazy and breaks the crap loose. Valve guides almost fall out -- okay, not fall out, but pretty close!!

Re: Penetrating Oils
I saw a similar article that tested the commercial products and home brews and, the Acetone/ATF mix came out the best.
I would caution the use of plastic containers with Acetone. I don't use mine very often and have found that the Acetone evaporates. I now add small amounts to my squirt can and keep bulk in sealed metal container (1 quart). It must be shook up before each use. Following these guidelines, I find it to be the best I've used.
