48 coupe- busted brake adjust cam in left front- what to do
When I pulled the drum today the adjuster cam was lying behind the brake rib. There is no adjuster nut or spring in back. It obviously fell off somewhere along the line.
As it happens, I have backing plates to salvage the pieces from, but what I would like to know is if anyone has repaired one before and how you did it.

Re: 48 coupe- busted brake adjust cam in left front- what to do
Just grind the staking off the face of the cam, punch out the shaft, clamp the parts in place using a big flat washer over the cam to allow access to the end of the shaft, and weld the shaft to the cam.
Saw once where someone drilled and tapped the shaft and used a button head capscrew to hold the cam on, more work; but no welding if that is a problem. Probably just as easy to switch out the backing plate for a good one tho. |

Re: 48 coupe- busted brake adjust cam in left front- what to do
Was up late last night thinking about the best way to fix this. Appreciate your reply Rich. I came to the conclusion that I would try doing exactly what you said about grinding off the staking, etc. I wasn't sure if the part was staked or somehow welded at the factory. Either way I figured it would come apart, but I didn't know how much force the big spring was exerting on it and thought it might be hard to get a reliable purchase on it in order to weld it. I'd rather not change the backing plate, so welding it in place what I was going to try. Your comment about tapping the stud is something I like a lot because I can do it on the bench and the screw will pull the spring back tight like it needs to be. Loctite should keep the button head screw in place, so viola!
Can't thank you enough.

Re: 48 coupe- busted brake adjust cam in left front- what to do
Update to the repair 1 21 2014.
I bought some button head cap screws and drilled and tapped the broken can bolt. Then I assembled it with the idea of using Loctite on the screw to hold it tight. The problem I had was that the flatted bolt didn't engage the hole in the cam very well and while the screw did hold it, the cam wiggled. Not having an arc welder, only gas, the final fix was that I added material to the end of a different broken bolt I had, building it up with weld. Then I filed the flats back to shape and cleaned up the outside diameter of the bolt so it would go through the backing plate. After assembling it I set it up on the bench with a big piece of steel under the cam bolt head and clamped the cam flat against the backing plate. Using the torch to heat just the end of the bolt, I pounded it down, squishing it into the cam hole and making it tight, very much like the factory staking was. It seemed to work out. Everything is nice and tight now.

I agree with TJ. All my cars have had the backing plates off and all the bolts and everything clean, nothing stuck. I would think 2 hours tops if replacement backing plate was ready.

Much quicker than prepping a replacement backing plate and then installing it. No need to break open the hydraulic system either. Regards, Ron
