Radiator
It's looking like my Dad may be in the market for a new radiator, can anyone recommend a good and reasonably priced one?

Re: Radiator
If you're buying a new one I'd buy from Berg's.
I still see some good looking original radiators come up for sale. I could have bought a good looking used one a couple months ago for $25. Of course who knows how good it is until you fill it with water to check for leaks. |

Re: Radiator
If you’re buying a new radiator, especially for 30-31, why not consider the original style dimpled fin core, 6 fins/in. unit from Brassworks? Comments from first hand buyers from Brassworks, please.

Re: Radiator
Looks like there are only Berg's fans out there. Or maybe only 28-29 experience prevails in this thread so far. So, what about the quality of 30-31 Brassworks 6 fin, dimpled units? Nobody with experience on these; hard to believe.

Re: Radiator
I bought a brassworks for my 28 direct from them. It was a flat tube 10 fins per inch. Works & fits good. Not cheap by any means.

Re: Radiator
Bergs, the only way to go. I have purchased 3 from Bergs, 2 for 1929 and one for 1930.
Perfect fit. I purchased one from Brass works and it would not fit. |

Re: Radiator
Berg's for me. With 160 degree thermostat, stays right on 160. Just got back from a 600+ mile trip in hill country.

Re: Radiator
Glad to see several guys have tried a Brassworks radiator, especially the dimpled 6 fin/in. unit. Until the most recent posts, everyone was saying "go Berg’s". While I’ve read that Brassworks had problems with the hose connection location on 28 & some 29s, I’d also heard (a) they’d resolved the 29 problem, and (b) there hadn’t been a fit problem with the late 29 and the 30-31. The 28-29 problem with the lower outlet seemed to stem from Ford’s change in the front cross member. I’m told that this is not a fit problem with the 30-31 Brassworks unit. Now if there are other problems that have resulted in so many respondents to this thread recommending “go Berg’s”, I’d surely like to know what they might be ~ for a 30-31. Thanks for all points of view.

Re: Radiator
Here is a link which details fit issues encountered with 1928-1929 Ford Model As. http://www.thebrassworks.net/1928-an...radiators.html
If someone has a concern about the fit of a radiator (any radiator), they should send it to whomever is building it to be used as a pattern. Restoration and fabrication from an original part is labor intensive and, while there are some savings on parts, it is usually offset by incremental time spent dismantling, cleaning up, removing dents, straightening and/or fabricating deteriorated parts. Core construction and core materials, testing and painting of the radiator is usually the same time and assembly may take more or less time depending on how cooperative the parts choose to be. |
