Need help on literature
I’ve read it on here more than once and I know the authors name is les Andrews. Which books of his should I acquire before I start doing maintenance? I’m not doing a restore. I plan on repairing what needs to be and maintaining/replacing consumable parts.
I pulled the (((front))) hub today as I could feel the bearing was loose. I also took the brake linings off and cleaned things up some. The parts had been greased (the rollers and the brake adjusters). I greased those parts and replaced them and now I’m questioning myself if I’ve done the correct thing. I know the adjusters get greased in the housing but I’m not sure about the wedge and rollers???? They had been as there was dried sticky molasses like grease on them. I need the literature to be confident in What I’m doing. Thanks |

Weather you are restoring or maintaining...Here is Les's book: Model A Ford Mechanics Handbook...A Complete Guide for Service and Maintenance.

Re: Need help on literature
As Steve said, the Mechanics Handbook, it is the red covered book, will get you through the maintenance of most items. If you machine has accessories I's go with the rest of the series. All three books have things that at some point you probably will find yourself wondering about. But, for starters at least the red book. That is troubleshooting, fix it and maintenance. The other two are good to know but not critical to keeping your car in good tune and reliable.

Re: Need help on literature
I don’t think you want to grease the rollers, for the very reason you stated. Grease attracts grit, and also as you noticed, can congeal and cause sticking.

I have all three, as a matter of fact I have 2 "red" books, one dirty for the garage and one for the house. I don't think I've opened the other two (blue, green) since I bought them.

Re: Need help on literature
I am also very interested in good literature.
Is the red mechanics handbook book I. by comparable to the restorers book (bottom left) by Victor Page? Or is the red book an increase / completion / better? I can not test that myself because I have to order the book in USA. Many thanks for the hints!

Re: Need help on literature
The red book is full of pictures and drawings to help with visualizing what the written text is telling you. I find that very valuable. Very easy to follow most instructions with good explanations of what to do, in order. Your results may vary, just my opinion.

Re: Need help on literature
Hello "book worms", because of the high transport costs, I may perhaps consider all three books to buy in USA.
Can anyone please give some hints what is described in Book 2 and Book 3? The original edition has no spiral binding but is glued to the back, do I think right?

Re: Need help on literature
The first book or (Vol1) is titled " complete guide for service and maintenance. The second book (Vol2) is titled "complete guide for installation and assembly for body wood, hydraulic brake systems and all aftermarket products. The third book (Vol3)is titled " complete guide for trouble analysis and testing. The first book is red, the second is green and the third is blue.
I do not know if the original or 1st edition is bound or not. My books all have something similar to a spiral binding but it isn't as you can add or change pages if you wish. Quote:

Re: Need help on literature
Today I received the red book from Andrews. It is a good book that is highly recommended for every A driver. "Must have every A-man".
Much is already known from the old Ford publications. But here are some helpful hints that are adapted to the current situation. I really like the clear layout. Sorted by A-B-C, each chapter is completely handled and you do not have to jump to many pages to find a single function completely. Thank you for your helpful advice! (I know, you too, my language is bad. Thanks therefore once more!)

Re: Need help on literature
Oh, that makes me sober. Thank you very much for this note. Of course, I'm very interested in bug-examples.
Thanks all in advance!

Re: Need help on literature
Gutentag Werner, the red book is great but use caution with it. Les and I disagree on a few things, like rear end assembly method, but it is still very valuable. Your english is far better than my Deutch, you are doing good!
