Default Coolant

Any thoughts on Evans waterless coolant? I was thinking of using it in my 53 Ranchwagon. Fresh rebuilt flathead, and nothing in the cooling system yet. I figured this would be a good time to use it. Seems like it would be perfect for a seldom driven vehicle.

All Evans does is lighten your wallet. A nice clean cooling system and regular 50-50 coolant and water will work just fine.

I guess I was thinking more on the rust prevention side. After further review I will go with antifreeze.

Save your money. Just use a 50/50 mixture of Prestone and change it every two year's to prevent electrolysis. A flathead is just an engine like any other engine, it does not need any kind of magic coolant.

A coupla bottles of water wetter will help. It reduces the bubbles between the inner surfaces and the coolant to promote better cooling. Take it easy on the anti freeze because it will raise your boiling temps but increase your coolant temps.

Premix is a waste of money. Get the concentrated stuff and add your own distilled water. Now you have twice as much coolant for pennies more.

I use propylene glycol, sold under the brand name "Sierra". It works fine, and will not pollute or poison pets if any leaks.

yes premix costs more but the mix ratio is important if the coolant is to work correctly ie freeze point , boil point and corrosion resistance if your confident to mix your own that's a bonus, premix is peace of mind

Agree with you. Mix of 50/50 of concentrate with water. Been doing it for years in the Pacific Northwest............

I mix mine but it still should be tested for its freeze point. Im careful to mix it correctly and had a batch that wasn’t low enough. I think it was 50/50 in a “concentrate” container....Mark
