Re: piston ring tool
Ronnie has it right - I use one all the time. It is also a great idea to pickup a ring end gap filer - has a little diamond wheel and a crank on the side. Is MUCH easier than using a hand file. (But they do remove material FAST - especially on cast-iron only rings).
I always buy "file to fit" rings - so that I can set my end-gaps to be exactly what I need. |

Re: piston ring tool
Thats the thing, but I saw a real nice one on utube, a falcom brand, could not find where to buy it.
I do have the ring filer, and it does remove metal fast from the cast rings, Thanks Lawrie |

Re: piston ring tool
Lawrie, how about posting a photo of the one you ordered? Assuming it is different from the run of the mill type.

Re: piston ring tool
In the few engines I have built it did not tale long to do this. The gaps are usually plenty wide enough and after a few you can probably tell by eye if there will be a problem. If you do not do this you have no other way of knowing if you have the correct rings.
