Default 41 ish side loader trans help needed

Ordered some parts and the trans book from vanpelt but hasn't showed up yet, while I was waiting I thought I'd go ahead and disassemble the side cover.

Got the pins out but the levers don't want to come off the shifter fork shafts. So in the picture I'm going to show below I'm wondering if these brazed or soldered ends are correct or if was someone's attempt at sealing a shaft leak. I can always try a bigger hammer but it seems to me that shouldn't be needed once the pins are removed

Looks like you've got something else going on there, you are correct that someone was brazed/soldered/welded ? the ends of the shift forks. Shouldn't be too hard to scare up another cover that hasn't been altered.

That's what I was thinking, didn't look right to me, I got new seals, guess I start with grind off the end see what I'm working with, if that doesn't do the trick I'll find another, but I'm not so worried about trying to be careful with this one now. Thanks

There's a good cover with forks and shift levers on ebay right now. Check with the seller to make sure it's the right part number.

Thanks guys, knocked right off after I ground down to the steel. Dunno why someone did that silliness, guess I shouldn't be surprised with all the stuff I have fixed

Someone probably didn't have replacement pins so they brazed it. I replaced my pins with small fine thread socket head cap screws and nuts with blue Locktite 20 years ago. Still working fine. As I recall, the transmission should be in neutral for reassembly. Let us know how you make out with your repair.

That would make sense if there weren't pins in it but the were there Ive just already removed them. The ridiculousness of "fixes" I've unfixed just to fix seems to never end

I believe those pins have to be swedged in position nice and tight so as to eliminate ALL play and chances of play.

Should be plenty of '40-'48 side shift covers around with arms and forks, all in good condition, since many of those side shift transmissions are being bought up and used for donor gears going into the earlier top load transmissions. I am getting ready to do my third and fourth conversion like this now, and have some nice, complete, and original '40-'48 covers and cases available at a good price. If anyone here needs them, send me a pm.

Just a few stubborn spots left to clean up before final degreasing and masking off then I'll be ready for paint.

Added painted transmission casing pic too. Sorry its not green or blue, though it's going in a 35 its getting mated to a late 49+ originally bronze 8ba

The shift arms are riveted and many times folks figured out other ways to secure them after an overhaul. Mac VanPelt stocks a clevis pin that is soft enough to be peened in but a person can get softer rivets from other sources as long as the arms stay tight. The only bad thing about brazing is that the heat would likely damage the shift seal in the cover.

If that one does not work for you, I have one off of a 47 side shift that I just removed and don't need. Its yours free of charge if it will help you out. Mark.

thanks for the offer but i think this one is going to be fine. still need to trim off the pins and work the ends down on my anvil. the pins were a very snug fit. gears all back in the case now as well. should have it all back together today except that i got the wrong bushings for the clutch release shaft.
