Default Trying to fit manifold heater & having issues, assist please

29town sedan and putting a manifold heater from Snyder’s on. But it’s sitting way to high and don’t understand why. Sights right at the edge of the firewall seam also. What am I missing please. ?? Both ,manifolds are originals.

What do you have for rear motor mounts?

While you may have original manifolds, you do not have an original manifold heater cover. You have a reproduction. You may have heard that some reproduction products do not always conform to the original's specs.
However, you should be able to 'tweek' the heater cover by shaving a little off of the matting surface to the manifold. It should only take a minimal amount of material removal to make the angle of the cover achieve a better fit.

I would suspect that your car originally had an Otwell Heater manifold which used a lower hole in the firewall than the Autolite dismountable unit. I would look for a good Otwell manifold and give the repo unit back to Snyders,,, Just my thought

I had the same problem when trying to fit a retro heater. In the end I decided where the hole in the firewall should be and fitted the heater to line up with that. I ground the underside of the heater (not difficult) then replaced the complicated Heath Robinson system for fixing the heater to the manifold with a simple "question mark" shaped piece of round rod, then cut a thread on the rod.

I will try an take some pictures of it later to-day.

Now the heater is so easy to fit and remove I can swap it between my two 1928 Model A's.

Afternoon all,

As promised, a couple of pictures of the easy way to modify an after market heater for your Model A.

Pix 1. The blue arrows show where the new heater was ground out to fit (side view). Plus the simple question mark hook I made to fit round the exhaust manifold, then a threaded end where it goes through the new heater.

When fitting you simple insert the question mark hook from the top, between the block and the exhaust manifold, twist to hook under the exhaust manifold, the lift up to fit the new heater.

Pix 2. The interior - 2 x blue arrows shoe where it is ground out.

Pix 3. Fitted heater

I hope this helps.

Looking at the pictures, your 29 Town Sedan seems to have the seam between the tank and the firewall much lower than my 29 Tudor. Maybe one size doesn't fill all.

That's interesting. Perhaps it's the angle of the picture, from the other side perhaps?

Also you have another type of exhaust manifold fitted, one with the casting for a different type of heater.

I would have thought the firewall on my 1928 Standard Roadster and your 1929 Tudor were exactly the same. Perhaps someone will enlighten me.

Tony: I believe your firewall and mine are the same. I was trying to compare those firewalls with Mark's (msmaron)'s firewall. His appears to have that seam for the gas tank much lower, and his heater is lined up right at that seam. On mine, the hole for the heater door is much lower than that seam.

Yes, mine does have the waffle type manifold made for the Autolite heater, but it was really the position of the seam between the tank and the lower part of the firewall on his car that I was wanting to point out.

Edit: Now that I look closely at Mark's picture #3 it looks like he has two seams in his firewall. Mine only has the one seam between the tank and the firewall.

Your right Bill, it does seem to have two seams. Perhaps another barn member can shed some light on that.

Then again, perhaps a 1929 Town Sedan is totally different!

It seems (yes, pun intended) that the issue is caused by the fact that Mark's firewall has two seams - not the more common, one, or none, that the heater cover was designed for. The lower of the two seams interferes with the heater's outlet. So, I think we are back to the 'filing to fit' of the aluminum cover.

My thought would be to jam the heater onto the firewall piece and tighten the whole thing tight with an two 8" hose clamps

Just a question. Does your crank line up with the crank nut on the crankshaft? It looks like the front of you engine is sitting a bit high. If the crank wont line up with the nut you may installed your front motor mount backwards.

The 29 Town Sedan has an extra panel below the gas tank. your gas tank fits under the cowl panel. On most model A's the gas tank is the cowl panel. Your firewall is different. You need a different heater. I have a 29 Murry fordor. The heater was harder to find however when I started looking I found several. Good luck with your search.

Not the issue, but that's an unusual fuel set up.

I would recommend that you put that heater on a shelf and not use it on your 29 (maybe 30 or 31) I just checked my 30 coupe with an Autolite manifold and airbox. It was 15 1/2 " from the top of the gas stank to the center of the heater "door" in the firewall. What that means to a 29 I can't say. But it looks as though the airbox sits lower on the engine than your model. The Autolite manifold has a shelf around the edge that that airbox rests on. If I lived in Illinois, I would have a working heater on it. Good luck!

Split a coke can length wise wrap it around the heater and fasten with hose clamps. I guarantee you will have all the hot air you need especially with that roadster.

EXACTLY, I do have an original split manifold heater on its way that i am going to try, The problem is YES the firewall is split and lower due to how the gas tank is mounted. I will post pics when i get it to show the fit to all.

Thanks everyone
