Continued Model B Problem
Have corrected my incorrectly wired coil problem and now have a good spark at
the distributor. However, another problem has surfaced that I've never had to the degree it is. Namely, a fuel problem. I don't start my coupe often enough and, invariably when I do I experience the normal fuel line bleed down problem as most of us do with our V8's. So What I usually do to rectify the problem is temporarily remove the fuel pump and work it by had to bring the gas forward in the line to the engine. As a rule after I've done this and reinstall the pump she'll fire right up for me. This time it's a no go. It's like the cam lobe is worn down to nothing which isn't possible as this is a completely rebuilt engine with very little mileage on it. I've tried two different pumps both of which have been rebuilt no no avail. Yesterday I temporarily pulled my carb and took it apart. The bowl was as dry as an old bone. The only thing I can think of that could be creating this weird problem is too much wear on the pump arms which means the diaphragms aren't being activated enough? What else might it be? Peter |

Re: Continued Model B Problem
Peter, by hand does the pump put out excellent suction? Again not pressure but suction. If the top cover cork gasket shrinks any from sitting, they will put out pressure (or at least feel so) but not have any suction. The 32 pumps have such a thin cork gasket that this seems to be the problem I’ve seen a lot including one just last week.

Re: Continued Model B Problem
Check that the pump top cover gasket hasn't dried out causing top cap to sit on fuel line casting boss , bolt feels tight but it is sucking air.
Good Luck Cheers Tony LOL , I,m too slow typing Michael has a similar answer |

Re: Continued Model B Problem
When the early style pump, with a top cover, sit and dry out that top gasket shrinks. I wrap a couple of turns of electrical tape around the gasket area and they start to pump. Once wet the cork will expand and you can remove the tape.

I usually use two rather than one cap gaskets. Are you confident that the line from the tank isn't blocked?

Re: Continued Model B Problem
Didn't try checking out cover gaskets yesterday. Will do that today and perhaps try Dave's
method of doubling up. |

Also;
Depending on when and if the pump has been rebuilt. The diaphragm could be going to pot. The old fabric rubber type, A just gets old and B don't like todays fuels, the rubber breaks down. Also the check valves might be worn or sticking. Might be time to pull the pump for some service work on it.

Re: Continued Model B Problem
Try Renner's Corner for a new diaphram and/or pump.
