hole in drip rail on a 33-34 ford ???
On the body sides of the decklid opening, there is a hole near the top on both sides. I have seen it on others, not just my car.
What is it for? |

That hole is close to where the pivot hole is on a 32 for a decklid. Never had a 33 or 34 with a trunk so can't say if it looks like it belongs there.

My 34 5 window had alum. wedges to center lid as it closed don't know if they were original have round rubber in then now, I will see if I can find them and post pics. They were 1/8 thick tapered up to top.Darrell

Re: hole in drip rail on a 33-34 ford ???
Oops! I did some more checking of my photos and while my Canadian-built '33 coupe does not have the holes, a U.S.-built '34 roadster I had did have those same holes.
The wedges fordcpe refers to were used on all '32 coupes, roadsters, and cabriolets, with or without rumble seats (at the bottom corners in the case of the latter) and similarly on Model As. Evidently on some, but not all '33s and '34s as well. (They are very hard on the paint of the deck and rumble lids where they interact.) |

Re: hole in drip rail on a 33-34 ford ???
In the U.S. '34 body parts catalog it (40-713970, guide, deck door) is listed for both '33-'34 for all cabriolets, coupes, and roadsters suggesting that it was also used with trunk lids down near the bottom corners (as was the practice for '32 and earlier).
They are easily made from aluminum stock or by using the Model A reproductions and rounding off the upper corners (they had squared-off corners). |

Re: hole in drip rail on a 33-34 ford ???
My '34 Cabriolet has them, my '34 Roadster has them, my '34 3-W coupe has them
All have rumble lids. My 5-w coupes with trunks do not have them. |

Re: hole in drip rail on a 33-34 ford ???
It would seem that a bit of confusion exists herein as to the hole in question. I'm pretty sure that both millersgarage and fordcpe are referring to the small hole in the vertical side of the recess in the quarter panel, not the large hole into which the rubber bumper fits in the horizontal triangular corner gusset (rubber bumper fitted with rumble lids only).

Re: hole in drip rail on a 33-34 ford ???
DavidG, exactly, the one on the edge of the quarter, not the bug bumper hole.
Thanks to fordcpe, that is the kind of info I was looking for. The photo I posted was not of my car, but of a friend's coupe, to show he had them too. |
