Default Rebuilders of Steering Gears

does anyone know of any individuals who will restore steering gears, to include painting the tube, the know-how to use used parts if in specs, etc.

I know some of the parts dealers offer a flat-rate rebuilding service but for those of us who might have accumulated some of the parts but never finished the job, or don't have painting skills, is there anyone who would work with you on an individual basis?

Randy Gross rebuilds 1950's F100 steering boxes including tubes etc. to replace the original Model A steering boxes. Almost like having power steering. I have one on my Model A as well as some friends have them as well.

Randy is located in the Greater Los Angeles area and ships all over. It is about a 2 hour install time to R & R.

I think Mikes In GA does it.

I would be open to that. I've had some luck with rebuilding steering boxes. But I don't want you to send it to me with a blank check and a "When's it going to be done?" I'd be willing to help you but I want you there, alongside me and we'd get it done. And no arguments about parts! Some of which are pretty necessary and high priced. But I have a feeling that you live far away. And as I said, I don't want a blank check and your steering column coming in the mail.

Plan on replacing all internal parts. Internal used parts within spec are more of an exception.

you guys are giving good advice, I am sure, but it kinda hurts to discard certain old parts because you don't really know how much wear is on them. but the complicating factor in my mind is the constant din here about the questionable quality of many repro parts. is a mis-manufactured repro steering worm better than a worn original?

The repo worms and sectors are fine to use and will give you godd and tight steering.. original used parts are most likely worn..
Replace both

Eric, As Mitch said, I've never heard any complaints about sector shafts and worms. But these two parts are a about $200! And you also need a 1"-2" micrometer. My advice is go to the local flea market. There are a lot of old, but very usable, machine tools at really discount prices. Get a good one (Wooden Case). Get yourself a 0"-1" too. You can't measure thousandths with a ruler! Good names are Starret , Brown and Sharpe, Etalon, mititoyo. Any one of those should give you good readings. Just a thought! I admire you for getting out of your "Comfort Zone" and even considering doing it yourself. Keep up the good thinking!

I have managed to get several great micrometers, some even with current calibrations on eBay. Terry's suggestions as to what to get are spot on.
