Default Water Pump End Play

I have researched the forum already and just have a question before I move ahead.

I have a "leakless" water pump on my Roadster that has been on the car for 25 to 30 years (at least a long time ago). I was just going over some things and found that there is forward and back end play of 3/16 inch. This does not leak however. Well maybe some drips but no significant leak. I see recommendations of putting a locking collar and a rubbing washer on the shaft. Does this fit under the fan shroud and rest against the front of the front casting support? My fan seems to come back and over the front support so I cannot tell if there is room to add this, or whether I am looking at this correctly. Should I be able to do this without removing the water pump?

Thanks for any clarification of how I apply this collar and washer.

Rich,
The collar and washer goes on the front of the shaft and the collar is against the housing or front bearing. You will need to remove the fan, pull the shaft forward put the washer and lock the collar onto the shaft with tighten the set screw. The collar kits should come with instructions. You do not need to remove the water pump.

Thanks, I will pull the fan before I go get the parts from Mike's. Nice having him fairly close by so you can order or go pick up if you feel like the drive.
