Default Step plate electrolysis

I'm putting my 32bb back together and wonder what's your take on putting something between the step plate and the running board? Thanks.

What kind of 'something' are you thinking about? A coating to inhibit rust?

When I took it apart it had a piece of rubber cut the same size as the plate. I'm just thinking that will retain moisture. was anything there origionally?

Originally, as back in 1932 when produced, there were no step plates. These were an aftermarket addition, not a Ford-released/authorized accessory.
