Default compression test gauge

I am wondering what you guys are using to test compression. The kits I see are expensive and don't have a 7/8" capability. I imagine that it would be required to wrap several layer of tape around the adapter.

I'm sure you wouldn't have to look far to find one of those old plugs that you can take apart. Take the bottom part and use it as an adaptor.

I have fancy compression testers that have all the fancy do-hickies and do-dads in place in their own box, but, if the sparklers are easily accessible I just grab a plain ole hand held and hang on to it.
I don't care if they are off a bit as long as they are consistent.
The center can be knocked out of an old sparkler and used for the adapter.
