Default 34 ford top seal

I am now trying to seal the metal top strip that goes around fabric top. I have the metal held on with small screws . original I believe was tacks and flathead bolts on the corners.
the guy before me put a rubber tacking strip that takes staples ok but tacks dont hold. thats why the screws . the problem is i want a water tight seal.
any ideas would be good

For whatever it's worth... I used small screws, just as you have mentioned. It's been awhile, and I'm not sure, but I think I used 4-40, and ran a tap into the gutter below to accommodate them. As I recall, I might have trimmed down the heads (not sure of that). Just whatever it took to make the heads appear to be about the same size as the original tack heads. I was interested in function, and not authenticity. It's been a few years now, and it seems to be working fine.
