Thanks yet again to Tony, Bob, n Ted. Seems there's such a wealth of info out there that a guy could get real confused of he didn't think hard on it. I'm leaning more and more now toward a F100 upgrade on the front. Also very interesting to hear about the lining material FlatheadTed. Since you are located not too far away, I might stop in for a chat sometime soon. If I can come up with a setup that stops the old gal without need for a booster, I would be real happy! Again, many thanks to you all.

My Last v8 (47) had a VH44 booster fitted. I don't reckon it worked very well as my current unboosted 48 stops better, so I think there was something wrong with it. VH 44 is an inline unit and is common retrofit booster used here. There are images if you care to google.

Just finished adjusting the cams. A lot of the pedal slop has gone out of it now and brakes are working better. Gonna take her out tomorrow for a test drive. We got a few nice quiet country back-roads round here so shouldn't get into too much trouble ( Famous Last Words ). Had the drums off earlier and notice that the linings look brand new. FlatheadTed mentioned that a lot of old cars that have had linings installed in recent years may have too hard a lining material for their unboosted brakes, and that a softer material gives better braking power. Anyone else heard of this, and how would a guy tell the difference?

Many years ago I was given a box of linings from an old garage that was shutting down. These were soft linings and as Ted said they worked great. The trouble with them was rapid wear,in those days my 37 was a daily driver and I went trough them fairly quickly.Once I had used up my supply I then had to use available bonded linings which were hard and braking performance dropped. My remote booster has bought that back, and I havn't replace linings in years. Cheers Tony.

Hillman hunter, was that a VH40? i was looking for a VH36 or something & was told they were $80 new, the person at the parts store he went to mixed up the price & it was $80 for a rebuild/gasket kit & $800-$1,200 or something for a new one. Check at repco or something. You might be lucky and get a bargain.

The problem is that a lot of linings are not marked these days ,we have identified the best ones to use though ,The brake boosters such as Tony's w44 booster can be retrofitted to a 39 or any un boosted car because it fits in the line after the M/C so can be hidden in the chassis rail .When we did dirt track we boosted our drum braked escort this way and could leave our braking very late for the corners ,most people had poor brakes and bunched up on the corners we had very good ones and could stay on the power longer . Mr 66miles call in on me any time .Ted 0211193090 .

Where can one find these boosters?

What amount of vacuum do they require?

Thanks
Jim

A small hole drilled in the intake manifold provides enough vacuum (8-10 mm hole?) Does this link help? https://www.powerbrakes.com.au/shop/...h&keyword=VH40 Looks like they are selling well repaired antiques.

Looks like I opened a whole can a worms with this brake thing. Must've been a few guys have had some close calls with the late model car in front. Very interesting to follow this thread. Thanks FlatheadTed , I will catch up with you soon!

Seems like this was somewhat covered before. At any rate,

try this...https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=127643

As for vacuum, use a Southwind heater vacuum plate. They pop-up on Ebay frequently for about $10.
