Default Throttle return spring and baling wire

Happy New Years! So I need to start posting some of the fixes my grandpa did to his 49 Merc over the years. Some are right off the southern Minnesota farm. At some point he attached baling wire to the return spring to hook it to the carburetor. Now, I too grew up and still live on the farm, but in Southern Illinois. I would consider this a good use of baling wire. However, my curious mind wants to know how what the correct installation looks like. Unless someone has a reason why this setup won’t work, I plan to leave it as is, because that is how grandpa had it. Thanks!

Several years ago I spent the whole day, I mean all day,
almost 8 hours,
making up the neatest little bracket to actuate the brake light switch on my roadster.
It was a work of art. Really.
The first time I stepped on the brake it broke/bent and deformed
It was so bad there was no saving it.
I calmly went in the house and got a wire coat hanger.
Not one of the skinny ones... this was a heavy wire coat hanger.
After all this was for a safety item ...no cutting corners with safety here !
It took me less then 5 minutes to bend it to shape and install it.
It worked perfectly and is still on the car 4000 miles later.
So in answer to your question..... about the bailing wire/spring.....Looks good to me !

Marv,
There's a return spring on the fire wall mounted linkage...some where...that is tired so grampa got 'er done his way. Better check those screws on the carb air horn,
they are ready to bounce out.

That spring setup looks almost like whats in the parts book. 8M-9737-B
36 coils x 3/4" O.D. x approx. 10-3/4" overall free length.

This is what the stock return spring looks like on the Merc.

That's not what the parts book shows for 1949, that is later.

That's a great looking car, and the building behind is pretty nice too! I'd leave that spring just the way he did it.

Duct tape and bailing wire are a requirement for an old car trunk, I never leave home without it.

Universal fix it all product here in New Zealand, this is what we would call a "number 8 job". Number 8 is the wire used on farm fences down here at the "ass end of the world". Even city folks like my self know of its handy uses and I always keep some close by in my garage.

Maybe that was grandpa's attempt to update the car to meet FMVSS 124 and have two sources of energy to return the throttle to idle.

I don't want to be the spoil sport here, but if it was my car I would try to come up with something better looking

You beat me too it. I was going to say that bailing wire was the duct tape of a time passed.

Perhaps to do with my age, born in '53, but I hate duct tape in all forms in automotive applications but baling wire has the look of a farmer repair in the 40s or 50s. And let's not kid ourselves, the baling wire still functions as it did when 'ol Grandad' fashioned it. Not so in 70 years with duct tape.

I'm aware of what the last line says, but I still stand by my statement. There is the rest of the car for remembering a respected relative.

Does it create tension when opened? Seems like the spring has some slack to it.

Number 8 wire in N.Z. ?
In Wisconsin we used no. 9 wire.
Last week I did a spring and baling wire to pull the clutch pedal all the way up to the floor on a ‘46 Mercury.
At least three of my cars have an added spring to the accelerator linkage with baling wire to get the tension just right.
It’s a right now fix and if done tight will last forever.
