'35 Ford Coupe tail light lamp

I bought a replacement lamp through Mac's, Vintique. It has a double
contact which my socket has. There are two nubs on the lamp, opposite

each other. One nub is closer to the bottom than the other. I cannot

get the lower nub aligned with the slot to turn and secure. Please see

my photos. Thanks.

The bulb base and socket only goes together one direction please note the staggered height of the pins on the bulb base. Olso in the socket. Push down when those are aligned and turn bulb 1/4 turn to the right to lock in the bulb.

Does your socket have equal depth slots?

The slots don't seem to be staggered. They just don't align with the nubs, While one nub has a slot, the other nub is too deep.

An nearly as I can determine, they are equal depth slots. The would explain why the buns don't fit. But the bulb from Vintique and Mac's are staggered. Se photo. That would explain why they don't fit. As I said, the slots seem to be equal depth...not 100% sure. But these are the bulbs on offer from Mac's.

What you can do is carefully file off the nub that's in the wrong place as a cowboy fix, a better solution is to buy another bulb with the nubs directly opposite each other. Then, all you've got to do is install the bulb correctly, so tailite is the dull glow, brakelite is the brite glow.

If I remember right; many stock sockets had even depth slots and the bulbs had even nubs and had "top" printed on the base. Think we even had 12v bulbs with even nubs in an old box at the truck shop.

You want an 1157 bulb.

All of you. This was my grandfather's car, and it's always been in the family. It sat garaged twice. From 1943 to 1968. Then 1969 to 2019. I work on it. It runs again. I'm not going to restore it, there are too many memories in it. There's quite a story. Thank you for all the info. I'll make it work right again because of you. OH. He bought the Ford new. A farmer's car.

1157 bulb is not correct for a socket with even slots. the 1158 is the 6 volt tail/stop light bulb for 6V even slot socket. Try a local auto parts sore or Amazon

Don Rogers is correct! 6v dual filament with EVEN pins is an 1158.





For a 12v dual filament with EVEN pins is an 1176.

hey Henry Carl,once you get the correct bulb in socket you want brighter lights? mart here on the barn came up with using a little aluminum pie tin so i went to my grocery store and came away with a small package of renolds alum.cup cake very shiney liners remove the paper separater cut a hole in bottom just large enough for bulb base the are so light weight bulb will support.i have a '37 ford works great brighter tail lights! they fit perfectly in the tailight housing. Tom.

Years ago I came across a tip on the Barn: paint the inside of your taillight buckets gloss WHITE. I've done it on a number of cars since. It works.

hey Ateek29,i'd like to hear how those little alum.cupcake liners work for you,if you do try them. after what Mart talked about doing to his tailights and when going to grocery store and not finding that same little pan i found the cupcake deals that made sense if you look at alot maybe all modern auto tailight reflectors you will see many dimples/faciting in the reflectors.which those little cupcake liners acomplish. Tom.

Here's Henrys', and the story. And thanks for asking to see the photos. Henry's will never be restored, as the story tells the reason. There's a lube sticker on the door that I couldn't upload the pic. In 1968, it had 6,888 miles. Now....7,400.

Finally. The right bulbs to get. And a great tip on making that 6v bulb a little brighter. White paint and or cupcake foil! Thanks all.

hey Henry Carl, you shouldn't need to paint inside of tail light buckets if you use cupcake foils because the foils totally surround the bulb. Tom.
