Steering column finish
I just rebuilt a 7 tooth steering column and can't locate any info in the JS regarding the luster of black paint to use. Can't find info under engine compartment, undercarriage, or area 8 steering column.
1. Dollar to a donut it's gloss black, right? Wanted to ask you guys first. 2. If info is in the JS, please tell me where. thanks, Mike |

Re: Steering column finish
It was originally dipped in gloss black paint. The last sentence in the JS's page 8-1.

Re: Steering column finish
Thanks Rusty. Now I see it. And the cover was painted black lacquer. Got it.

Re: Steering column finish
Mike,
You probably don't want to go this far but it appears from unrestored original 7 tooth columns and one NOS column that the lower cast body was lacquered. From the attaching point of the casting to the tube appeared to have been high gloss black from dipping. This detail isn't in the JS so no worry, just a long time observation. JB |

Re: Steering column finish
jb-ob: Thanks. Very interesting. Maybe you should bring that to the attention of the Judging Standards Committee?

I am on the Judging Standards Committee. My comments are based on my 'random observations' which I thought might be of interest to others fascinated by Model A's and their production. I will add A 3505 'Steering Gear Housing and Column Assembly' to my next visit to the Archives. Some times the blue print will indicate finishes. JB |

Re: Steering column finish
The seven tooth steering column assemblies that I own and have ever seen don't have a removable column tube but are made in one piece . the later 2 tooth steering assemblies have an adjustable , removable steel column tube and a cast lower gear box body .

Re: Steering column finish
Purdy,
Look closely at the 7 tooth assembly, the lower gear housing was a casting and welded to the tubular column. At about the 'seam' of the two is a definite gloss difference. The two tooth is a two piece assembly, the steering gear box and tube column bolted together. The box, as with most adjustable assemblies, was sprayed where as the column was dipped black. My initial posting was just my observation of unrestored & one NOS 7 tooth assemblies,....... yours may differ. JB |
