Default torquing 8ba heads with an oil filter

I am reassembling the heads on an 8ba v8 engine. The original oil filter is in place. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to torque the heads bolts which hold the filter is in place? Thanks for any help you may provide.

8BA oil filters are attached two ways. '49's use the actual head bolts themselves, while the later models have bosses cast into the heads and the filter housing bolts on them with smaller bolts. It sounds like you have the earlier type, is this correct?

Like tubman intimated, if you have the filter canister that is bolted to the head with 3 head bolts, you install the oil canister in place using hardened flat washers with the head bolts and torque to specs.

Yes, the filter that I have is held in place with 3 of the long actual head bolts. The question I have, is how you get a torque wrench in place to do the actual torquing.

I've never had an early engine, so I can't be of much help. However, I have heard the a "crow's foot" wrench on an extension might get around the obstacles. If you can, turn it to 90 degrees from the axis of the torque wrench to minimize the effects of leverage.

A crow foot attachment will work, but there is some math involved for the torque correction factor. Any torque wrench manual should have the information (or check online).

If you used a short universal joint with an extension on your torque wrench you can tighten the head bolts very close to the torque specifications without any problems. The photo below shows the adaptation of the 3/8 inch bolt canister to the wider head bolt configuration. There is enough room for the torque wrench using a universal joint and an extension.

I did try using an extension, universal joint and a crows foot. I only did the first tightening sequence. I'll check online for any needed torque adjustment. Thank you all for your help.

Go grab an extension out of your tool drawer and spend five minutes massaging the square end on your grinder. Works way better than a universal. You'll end-up using this extension mucho-alot in the future. This ain't no trick for a show dog. Sorry about the gi-hugic picture. DD

I just went out to the garage and found that I can fit a torque wrench to those oil canister head bolts by using a short 3/8 socket and 3/8 inch extension with 3/8 adapters on a 1/2 in. drive torque wrench. Also, using a short 1/2 in. drive socket on the head bolt with my 1/2 in. drive torque wrench will also work. As a last resort you could cut a longer head bolt socket shorter if you have a lathe. If not, grind it shorter as needed. 1st photo shows 1/2 in socket directly on torque wrench. 2nd photo shows 1/2 in drive torque wrench using 3/8 in. reducer and extension. There is still enough room to move the toque wrench handle.
However, i like V8's swivel extension idea a lot

Here are some torque wrench calculations if anyone is interested. The values change when a swivel is used and is not 90 degs to the wrench (+/- 15 deg). The chart is not easy to read, but will maybe give you the idea.

Mr. Seery. Thanks for that. I Googled Angle Torque Wrench and lots of neat stuff appears.

Hey guys, thank you for your help. The oil filter canister that I have seems to more closely surround the head bolts. Nevertheless, I will try all of the suggestions and report back with results. Also unfortunately, since my move I no longer have my mill, lathes and welders. Just like being back in high school "making due".

Those are called wobble extensions. Google will find many price ranges. I have some no-name from many years ago that have served me well.

Cannot think of the name for them but there is a box end tool on the order of a crow foot with a tall C shaped body and square drive end on the top of the C. Will reach under rocker arms and shafts. No need to alter torque reading, but I guess it's a OHV thing.

Interesting. Please explain with more details. I know there are lots of folks who don't use a filter.
