Default Does this look right?

We are putting a friend's engine together and I'm not sure this hole is supposed to be between the valve gallery and the timing gear .

The hole is for oil in the valve gallery (from the oil pump) to flow to the timing gear area.

I know it looks like it was just banged out and it was at the factory.

The blocks were cast very thin in that area so it could be opened with a hammer, saving a separate machining operation.

Thank you very much. The problem was that neither of us had ever noticed it before.

I was concerned on mine about that opening being lower than the first baffle. I looked at my spare blocks, and they're all the same. It seemed to me all the oil pumped into that front chamber would want to pour out the front instead of going over the baffle to the rear. I suppose the cam gear slings a lot of it right back in as mist.

Yes, Stew, it is supposed to be there. It is a rough hole used for oil overflow to the timing gear area.
