removing 36 coupe radiator
My radiator is leaking in a few spots. What is involved in removing the radiator?

Re: removing 36 coupe radiator
2many, I'm going on memory here from when I disassembled my '36, so bear with me. There are the two bolts at the bottom that hold the radiator to the frame - remove those. Also, there are two screws at the top where the grill attaches - remove those. Of course the two support rods that go from the radiator to the firewall - those need to come out.
I believe the generator with attached fan also needs to be removed in order to gain clearance from the radiator to the engine block. After that, completely remove the 4 radiator hoses as you will need the room to maneuver the radiator out. From there it's an up and out process, clearing each of the obstacles on the way up. I recommend two people as these rads have some weight to them and you will need to reposition your hands a couple of times before you get the rad out. Hope this helps. |

Also, what I do is place a piece of cardboard next to the radiator to prevent accidentally bumping something and bending the fins during the process.

Re: removing 36 coupe radiator
I forgot to mention that this car has a 8ba engine, and I think the low mounted water pumps may be a problem. Is it a big pain to remove the grill??

Re: removing 36 coupe radiator
Not sure, but it might be easier to just remove the 8BA pumps rather than the grille.
Plus, less chance of paint chipping. |

Re: removing 36 coupe radiator
Pull the hoses and whatever doesn't clear. Jimmy it out. Not the first radiator pulled. You'll be fine.

Re: removing 36 coupe radiator
It is over kill to remove the front clip and/or grille from a '36 Ford to get the radiator out.
The instructions posted by "50droptop" in response #2 is pretty well spot on. In years gone bye I pulled the radiator, and/or engine in my '36 by only removing the hood and the components that were listed. It is a slow process requiring help from a second man, and care to make sure you don't damage the core, etc. I don't think the 8BA ignition will be in the way. The out-lets on the heads should also not cause a problem, after all the original '36 water pumps were on the upper front of the heads. The front end, grille, etc., have never been off of my '36 during it's entire life..

Re: removing 36 coupe radiator
I Was concerned that the lower hose connections on the radiator would get caught on the 8BA water pumps. The distributor should not be an issue.
I dont see new radiators available, except aluminum with the wrong upper pipes, so this one will need to be repaired or recored. |

Re: removing 36 coupe radiator
Just had the radiator out/in on my '36 Phaeton. Here's what I did.
Drain coolant protect the cowl and fenders remove hood including the front hood bracket that mounts to rad. This is easier with two people. Remove upper and lower hoses, lower ones can be slid fore/aft to get one end to clear, then pull the free end down. remove the brace rods remove the generator remove the horns easier if you also remove the distributor and the ignition harness remove the screws from the upper tabs to the grill side pieces remove the lower screws and springs -- don't lose the rubber pads. pull the radiator up, turning it side to side and tilting to clear the grill sheet metal. Watch out for the generator stud, it will tear up the core. Much easier with two people, it weighs about 35 lbs. My engine is an 8BA and I didn't need to remove the water pumps. I used my chain hoist as it lets you move the rad up/down a little at a time and control it. To install, as is said, reverse above procedure. WD-40 sprayed inside the lower hoses lets them go back on much easier. Removing the grill is a bear, nearly impossible with the radiator in place. Good luck. Job took me about 3 hours each way, you may be faster than me as I don't work as hard as I used to.

Re: removing 36 coupe radiator
Good news, Mr Witt. I am encouraged, and will give that a try. The engine crane will substitute for the chain fall, and I have high hopes.

Re: removing 36 coupe radiator
Same as J witt, chain block ,35 /36 loosen the radiator mounts ,run the motor till hot ,slide the Radiator forward at the bottom ,use a crow bar and force the lower hoses off the motor while hot by pushing in the middle to fold them .fit a bearing x washers or something that revolves on the generator stud ,with card board lift on the front lift , I leave the pumps grill on , Ted
